Im confused. 3770k or 3820k ?

I know this sounds stupid, but alto the model number is higher I never see people with this 3820k chip. Instead everyone is jumping on 3770k which leads me to ask. Is it a faster chip ? Or is 3820k faster chip cuz its only 280 dollars @ amazon. thanks

I don't think there is a i7-3820K, only a i7-3820.

Numbering schemes are tricky. The key to evaluating processors is identifying the microarchitecture first and then other features like clock speed, # of cores, and for Intel processors, Hyperthreading.

The 3770K is an Ivy Bridge while the 3820 is a Sandy Bridge. Clock-for-clock, Sandy Bridge is slightly slower than Ivy Bridge.

Also, the 3820 is on the LGA 2011 platform, so those with a LGA 1155 mobo would not be able to upgrade to it.

Both chips are 4c8t. At stock the 3770K would be faster in any task that the 2011 chip couldn't make use of its increased memory bandwidth or PCI-e lanes due to the 3770s faster clockspeed and improved IPC.

LGA 2011 has quad channel DDR3 as compared to dual channel on 1155, but you're not likely to ever saturate even 1155's memory bus, it's a niche feature.

2011 has Sandy Bridge quads and hexes with quad channel memory.

1155 has Ivy Bridge duals and quads with dual channel memory and is a lot cheaper.

The 3820 is 299 currently on newegg and jr with free shipping. It has a max bus core multiplier of 43.

You can keep your bclk at 100 but they have cpu multiplier which will make it
100 (1.00x)
125 (1.25x)
166 (1.66x)
250 (2.50x)

Thus a you can have bclk at 100 a cpu multiplier of 1.25x and a bus core multiplier of 40 and obtain 5 ghz.

If you understand fractions it is just as easily overclocking a 3820 as it would be a 3820k since you are not changing the bclk.

That said unless you want to eventually upgrade to a 6 core or you need vt-d+overclocking it is better for you to get a 3770k or 2700k and save the extra money since the 3820k motherboards are much more expensive for little benefit.
