SAN DIEGO ? Dozens of people, perhaps hundreds, vying to get their hands on a PlayStation 3 hunkered down in front of stores around the county overnight and, in some cases, broke into fights in anticipation of the video game system's limited release at midnight Friday.
Best Buy employees in Mission Valley called police early Thursday and reported that fights were breaking out among the buyers waiting outside the store, said police Detective Gary Hassen. About 50 people were reportedly involved.
Buyers also lined up outside Circuit City stores in the North County.
About eight or nine people stood in line at the Circuit City in Encinitas, where employees informed buyers that they would only have eight units for sale.
In Escondido, about 20 people also waited. They have slept in five tents and sleeping bags for more than a week just to get a crack at buying the computer entertainment system.
Police there said they had not received any reports of problems.
By late Thursday morning about 70 people waited in line that wrapped around one side of the Best Buy in Mission Valley. The majority of the buyers ? mostly in their 20s, and mostly male ? slept on the sidewalk or sat in folding chairs.
Some of the buyers protested the police's response and blamed the store for not organizing the line.
?We got here at 10 p.m. and were waiting and waiting but we were told different things,? said Trisha Wilcox, 23, of North Park. ?We were at the front of the line but now we're at the end of the line.?
Sylvia Emmanuel, who is in her 40s, stood beside her and said the crowd started to gather overnight and early Thursday morning.
?They were hiding behind cars and in the bushes. They wanted to cut in line,? she said.
Despite the wait and potentially slim chances of getting the video game player, Emmanuel said she was still going to wait until midnight to try to buy one at $599.
?I'm here because I want an PS3,? she said. ?My boyfriend said don't come home without one.?
Jesse Kreger, 24, of La Jolla, also arrived Wednesday night but had better luck with his friend, Eric Seilo, 23, of Los Angeles. The two were first in line after they were escorted to the side of the building by police about 7:45 a.m., he said.
Kreger said he chose the Best Buy in Mission Valley after driving around the county, going to stores such as Target, where lines had already formed.
?They were only getting four PS3s, so I knew our chances were bad there,? he said.
Best Buy store employees said they wouldn't know how many of the new PlayStations they would have available until late Thursday night, when they were to receive their last shipments from Sony.
The systems, ?are the latest and the greatest,? Kreger said.
Maria Rodriguez was the only parent waiting in the middle of the line with hopes of buying the video game player for her 14-year-old son.
She planned to wait all day until her son was done with school, when he would then wait in line.
?I'm not a fan of this so I'm doing it for him,? she said in Spanish.
Rodriguez said she agreed to buy it for him to reward the boy for working hard in school and being obedient.
?It's a lesson for him that if you work hard and you do well, there will be rewards,? she said, although she noted he will also pay his parents back for it in payments.
