I know a lot has been made about how wonderful and real the scenery looks in this game, but I have a very big bone to pick with this game:

WTF can't my machine plow through this game at acceptable resolutions and framerates?! It's absolutely ridiculous! I have an A64 3200 (@2.2ghz), 512 x 2 of XMS3200LL, and a 9800 Pro and I still have framerate issues at 1280x1024. That is absolutely unacceptable. I have the latest Catalyst drivers, but the same thing happens with the older Cats. With a high end rig like mine, there is no reason why I shouldn't be able to run Far Cry at 1280x1024 with all the eye candy on.

I have no idea how people are playing this on slower rigs, but it sucks and something needs to be done about it. Please don't bring your "It runs fine at 800x600, low details for me" comments in here. There is a problem with this game and it needs to be addressed.

Whaaaaa. The game will run fine for the next gen, that's how life is. Did you see that garentee on your 9800 pro box? "This card will run every present and future game will all eye candy or your money back!"

How does it play for you, smartass?

I hear everyone saying how great it looks, but having to run the game with AA/AS off and running at sub 1280x1024 resolution on today's powerful machines, how good can it honestly look?

For years you elitist hardware-happy OC-freak "it's 2% faster at 20% price boost, I MUST HAVE IT" money-burners have been whining about "When are they going to release a game that utilizes the full potential of my 432876GHz 5245MB RadeonVidia 23897?" - and now that one has come along that makes your system its bitch, you're complaining that it's too detailed.

1280x960 Max Details with low AA , no AF. Looks freaken great. I get acceptable frame rates.

A64 2.2Ghz 3000
9800 415/310
Cat 3.9's.

Im actually happy that they made a game with such high detail.

1024x768x32
2xAA, 4xAF
Medium Settings

This looks great. Well, I don't think the graphics are that amazing, but the difference between Medium and Highest is unnoticeable.

1600X1200 on an FX5900 @ 450\900
CPU XP@2.2Ghz
Ram:2X512 PC2100

I believe all details are set to medium with shadows set to high, no AA, 1x AF.

Usually get between 30 and 50 fps with a low of 8 fps in like 2 rooms so far and a high of 98 in a few hallways.

When the dynamic lights increase performance drops.
I dont know what it all means but when I see this my fps dips below 20 fps

DynLight 3/3/16

Not totally sure what that means hehe. But when it increases the performance drops significantly.

Personally I was surprised I can run at that rez and still have a very enjoyable experience in 99% of the game. NV40 and R420 should have no problems running this game.

I want to be that happy! :)

I'll turn down the shadow detail and use the settings you kind folks have given me. Thanks.

My settings are:
1024x768 32bpp
Highest Possible settings with shadows on low
noAA 8xAF

Dont expect a huge increase with shadows on low but it will help out in the very intense areas. My framerate isnt very good but it is certainly playable but Im not sure what I get since I havent installed FRAPS yet and my gaming PC is down at the moment.

on the command console you can get the game to display your fps

\r_displayinfo 1

that will turn on fps and other information

\r_displayinfo 0

turns it off

No. You get instead, one of those old black and white movie countdown intro screens. Except this time it's in reverse.

The game is badly optimized, high-end cards perform very poorly sometimes.

It runs well on my GF3, though.
1024x768, no AA, no AF, shadows at low, everything else at the highest possible level, and I get 15-40 FPS.
I don't have a DX9 card, it is possible that the lack of some effects affects my performance seriously.

By the way, why does one need any anti-aliasing at 1600x1200?
