I'm buying a Matress

I'm in the market for a mattress. I'm 6'4", so I think I want a full or a queen. I have about $500 to spend. Any advice? I really don't know where to start. All the mattress stores seem like scam shops.

Definitely get a queen if you can. They're usually not TOO much more expensive but can at least sleep two comfortably when needed. Even though I've never had a problem with mattress stores (my best friend's dad owns the largest chain in town so I get good deals) I noticed that Sam's Club actually had mattresses in there when I was there this weekend. They seemed like the lower-end Sertas and such, but for the price range you're looking at it might be a decent place to buy. They have them up on their sides though so you won't get to try them out like you would in a mattress store.

And on that note, keep in mind that many manufacturers sell the same exact mattress under many different names in an attempt to make it very difficult to comparison shop between retail outlets.

I saw one of those informercials for the 1 inch layer of NASA developed memory foam to contour to your body to give you a more relaxing and supportive sleeping surface. try that.

It would probably be better than nothing, but I don't really think 1" is enough.

Try the whole mattress: TempurPedic

don't skimp on your matress.

And like most furniture, the markup is outrageous. 200-300%.

-edit- family friends own furniture shop. Got 8000 dollar bedroom suite with matress, etc for 1600...and they still made money.

Wow - Spidey, that is a huge markup! Wanna hook me up?😀 Serously, do you know any strategies I could use in order to avoid the majority of that markup? My budget is pretty much set in stone - and I definately want to get a top quality mattress.

I got a top quality mattress from a discount seller.
Every dealer Mattress Firm, Mattress Giant, etc. has an outlet store.
They discount the mattresses that were floor demos or new model demo lines sent to the retailers for evaluation.
The only downside is you don't get the warranty.
If you are real fat and likey to break a spring in the mattress this might concearn you...

get a queen, no question, im only 5'11 and while a full is enough, a queen size is great to sprawl on...but i wouldnt want a full size if i was your height, no way

It isn't THAT hard to comparison shop. Every retailer has a book telling them what the competition calls the same mattress. It's like the Rosetta Stone of posturepedics.

We got hooked up with a queen-size pillowtop mattress for ~$300 from Sleepy's. Retails for $800 at the store. Serta PerfectSleeper it is, I believe.

We were hesitant at first, but the thing really does feel phenomenal. We've slept on it for the past month and not once have had a restless night. Try a brandname pillowtop!

I think they used to have a 'free 120 day demo' where you could try it at no cost for 120 days.

I bet there is no strings tied to that deal either.... (sarcastic) 🙂

I've a question, if you claim for warranty after 8 years of uses (well, most mattresses have more than 10yr warranty), do you deal with the manufacturer or the shop you bought it from?

her209,

A king sized matress brings more peace to a couples life than any TV. If fact I can't keep the woman off my 65".

"Damn woman...you already got your own TV upstairs, now leave spidey alone to play video games and watch southpark in my underwear."

"damn woman trying to ruin spidey time."

🙂

I bought a Serta queen for around $500-600 from Sears about 6 months ago.

it's fairly firm but with a pillowy type top. I love it! I lay down and I'm out like a light seconds later

To have heavenly, nirvana sleep, with the matress you choose ( I like the pillow top serta perfect sleeper) you gotta get a down comforter for bottom and top. A 380 thread count or better. I am almost as tall as you, and I've had King and queen. Queen will place you a bit closer to that pretty lady next to you than a king would, and length is the same. Queen size is less expensive for sheets and bedding too.

Good luck.🙂

I have a Queen mattress that is about 18-21 inches thick.
Sheets are damn expensive for my bed.
Oh well, it is worth it...
