I'm buying a handgun

OK,

So I've thought about this a lot. I'm going to apply for my concealed carry permit. I read about it here, and I'm sure this is what I want to do. I'm thinking HK, I don't want to go with a glock because i know too many people that they jammed up on. Is there any way to hurry up the process? I don't want to wait 6 months.

H&K is good. I haven't had an issue with Glocks- I've carried Glock 21, 22 and 36...going to 21SF this fall.

hahaha yeah yeah yeah

seriously though, I've fired a good number of guns in my day, but never actually owned one.

You might want to consider a Kahr as well. They make awesome carry guns and the P40 is right up your alley. They also have the CW and PM series if you are looking for something smaller.

I'm gonna be the guy who comes in here to recommend an odd brand of gun

FNP 40

I have heard the PX4 is super low recoil for a .40, but it has to rotating barrel which makes it less reliable.

Glock is by far the most problem free handgun you can buy. Not sure who your friends are that have had them jam on them but that's definately not the norm.

A H&K will jam on you WAY before a Glock will...

I'd recommend you handle several different brands before deciding.

I have got a H&K USP .40 but wish I had checked out SIG and Glock first; the SIG and Glocks just seem to fit in my hands better.

Sig P226 🙂

For carry a P229 is better.

OP, why aren't you considering either one of these?

or a BERSA Thunder Ultra Compact? the BERSA is really cheap and will give a good bang for your buck.

The M&P 40 is a pretty good bang for the buck. (no pun intended)

Early M&P's were plagued with problems (for example, buddy of mine's magazine drops every time he pulls the trigger...and he's already sent it to be "fixed" by S&W). Not sure if the newer versions are any better.

I was a big fan of the USP Compact .40 when I fired one too, but after doing some research and shooting it again I moved on. It's a slick, well shooting pistol, but it's designed to work in narrow limits. Honestly 99.9% of the time it'll work fine, but for those "what if" situations I'd steer clear.

I know the "torture tests" are ridiculous but I saw a Glock 17 vs. USP test, the Glock passed every test, the USP failed on the first one. On top of that too much of the mass is in the slide (same with Sigs), in rapid fire you'll have more muzzle flip than with a lower/flatter slide.

If you like the USP Compact check out the Springfield XD/XDM. Great shooters, they feel good in the hand, disassemble like a Sig, and have a Melonite coat on the slide to protect it (like the Glock's legendary Tenifer finish).

I really don't care for the looks of the PX4. I'm more of a 92/96 series man.
The PX4 may look kind of odd, but the grip angle makes it point very naturally, and the adjustable grip size help it fit a variety of hand sizes. These characteristics are shared by the M&P.

There is nothing in a rotating lock type mechanism to make it any less reliable than the more conventional tilting barrel.

Glocks are not known to be prone to jam (Kaboom! is a different issue...). My distaste for them stems from the poor grip angle and the blockiness of the grip.

I've not heard of any issues with current production M&Ps.
