So I've thought about this a lot. I'm getting some protection from all the wackos out there who think everyone is out to kill them and can't wait until someone approaches them at night, probably to ask directions or something, giving them an excuse to unload 15 bullets into the guy, probably missing with most of them, and there I stand a hundred yards away minding my own business when suddenly I have a surplus of lead in my bloodstream. No thank you.

He wasn't asking for directions in this story. One person was asking the "wacko" for directions while the OP was a hundred yards away doing his own thing.
