I'm from overclock.net (my alias on there is TheInformationator) Anyway, I know that anandtech readers are generally knowledgable, so if you have any cool ideas, feel free to add them. I'm not big on SLI... I want to wait for an ATI AMR board if possible, but if not I'm goign with the DFI Ultra-D

I'm getting the VX 4000 from Monarch soon, and I've heard great things about Monarch Joe on here <_< >_>. I don't know if he browses these forums but if he could help me out with the VX I would appreciate it.

..and no I'm not made of money... I've been saving for years o_O You're only rich until you blow it all on a rig lol.

Anyway, post your thoughts guys!

why not FX-53? or maybe just a 3500+ to save some money, and you would still be able to have a nice o/c.
Have you considered watercooling instead so you could cool your videocard as well? It will be cheaper and less noisy than the Vapochill, but won't o/c as well ofcourse :)

You're getting a $500+ CPU and a sub $300 videocard?

If this is for gaming, switch those budgets around and you'll get better performance in the end.

I'm not getting an FX-53, because it is 400 dollars more than a 4000... but they are identical processors except for the sole different that the FX-53 is multiplyer unlocked upwardly. Well, since I am getting such high-end RAM and a nice motherboard, I will be able to raise the clock rate well beyond it's stock clock rate by raising the FSB... Since it's on phase change I'll be able to keep a high multiplier while raising the FSB... thus... I save money... but get the same results... it would be pointless to buy an FX-53.

I don't want watercooling because it can be a mess, it really doesn't perform all that well most of the time unless you use a peltier, I don't plan on OCing my vid card much, and I flat don't want it... besides, phase change rawks.

Good idea... but most water cooling systems are crap in my opinion.. I've read plenty of reviews and considered them and I just wasn't impressed.

lol, money spend isn't always money well spent.

I am probably switching it to an X850XT... but so far that card is what has me most impressed. It is a very well-put-together card. Besides, I plan on getting AMR, so that means I can upgrade to a 2nd, must faster (*cough*FUDO*cough*) card in the future.

i wonder if the ati amr vs nvidia sli is going to be a intel vs amd type of deal.... kind of going to be a pain in the ass for us consumers as we will have to build from the bottom up and can't change our minds later unless we want to spring for new mb and vdo cards

It won't be outdated in a few months when your processor is already a few 100 Mhz in the future lol. I'll be happy with this for years to come just like i've been pretty happy with my now 6-year old computer. It's all a matter of contentment..... but for a year or so... this baby will RULE.

You're crazy. Buy a $1200 comp, OC, be within 10% of what you got built there and buy $3114.63 of AMD stock.

I've thought about it a lot... If you look at the list, a lot of the components that are expensive are not the PC itself, they are things which I can reuse for a long time.

The speakers (400 bucks)
The case (about 150)
The Keyboard (50)
The Vapochill LS (850 bucks)
....and I'm sure plenty of the cards.

Regardless, I'm keeping the one I'm building for as long as I'm keeping hte one I own now.

I will be about 25 or 26 by the time I might be done with this PC.... By then I will have a steady job etc. Also, I made sure to leave at least 2000 bucks in my account for "padding" Anyway, lets not talk about my financial life. Keep up the comments :p

i guess this board is just a little more conservative and we don't measure things by the speed of our computers....

how old are you now? it is not that we want to talk about your finances, but we are just trying to help you out. spending an extra couple of grand for a couple % points in some benchmark that you will never notice when actually using the machine is just not a good investment. and remember, computers lose value very quickly.

I will not indulge in your off topic questioning :p

Everyone, please either critique the rig and talk about it, or..... please leave <_<. I didn't come here for financial advice or a life evaluation.

Alright alright, I'm 18. I could just see the stupid age comments coming. I figure it'll last a good 6-7 years just like this one. I've had to replace a fan and HD on this build, but other than that it's served me well for a solid 6 years.

Since I am buying such high-end components for the build I mention in here... I figure it will last me upwards of 8 years. It's not like I blow 4000 bucks every year or so on a new rig. The reason I'm spending so much is becuase I'm thinking long-term.

Dude you're hilarious. Computer is grandmaster of depreciation. A liability. Tech gets cheaper and faster all the time. In three years that box with be worth maybe $200. Your thinking is very short term. You want something you can tinker with, make you feel good. Emotion is your primary thinking nothing more.

there will be no age related comments. in all reality why not spend $1000-$1200 and still last for quite some time. thinking a computer you build today will be viable in 8 years is just not going to happen, if that were the case i would still be running my pentium 75 w/ 40MB of ram on a 1GB hdd. i was were you are at one point (but didn't have an option as parts used to be as expensive as hell), hell my first laser printer cost over $1000, my first scanner cost over $1000, my first computer was $2000+, it is just most of us here have been in it for some time and know that as fast as things are now you don't need to spend $4000 on a computer that will be outdated at most in a year. that's all, no disrespect, just looking out for you. :)

I'm an INTJ... emotion isn't really a big part of it. I'm thinking long term for ME. I don't sell computers. Like I care if it holds its value. I am thinking long term for ME because I know if I buy crappy components I will regret it later when they are all failing on me like has happened with this computer at times. I've been through some real frustrations with this one and I'd appreciate if you'd quit posting because all you're doing is antagonizing me and contributing nothing. At least bob is helping some.

In a way, I can see that you're right. But from my side of things.... I've been waiting a looooonnnngggg time to build my new computer. We're talking years here... because I've been waiting for technologies like PCIe and SATA, etc. I can play the waiting game forever, or I can buy a mid-end system now... and save money, but then what? Buy another mid-end system in a few years because I am sick and tired of my slow mid-end system?

I know it is not really wise from a financial standpoint but here's how I see it:

I use my computer tons.... I'm going into graphic design and I've experienced first-hand how painful it can be working on a slow computer (27 hours worth of pain in photoshop 7 on a slow computer... multiple crashes... I've lost over 3 hours of work and had to go back and do the same thing).... Also, I've been extremely frugal for my whole life. I barely spend any money. The way I see it is: I've got 6000, I'm earning 2000 more this summer, I might as well spend 4000 and treat myself since this is a big part of my life.

Value for money is not buying the fastest stuff. You're going to double your expenses for the last 10-20% of speed. Sure it will be a killer system now. In a year it still be good, two years it's mid range (except for the vapochill unit). And so on.....
But it will never be a good investment in price/performance ratio.
