The system is pretty good. What i meant, is that even if I get an FX-55 (which i won't) the only things i expect from it are:

can processor words,
play HL on steam
read ebooks
surf net.

That is all of my expectations. 🙂

Will Socket 754 Support Windows ME? I don't think it supports TNT2 either.

Currently, My computer will be either

AMD Athlon 2400+ or AMD Sempron 2300+ - 2600+
256-512MB RAM
40-80GB HDD
TNT2 Graphics or a better one for no more than $30 (excludes tax)

It is not a good gaming system, but I don't game often.

is Sempron better than Athlon XP?

Socket 754 Supports the TNT2 if you have an AGP slot. In fact, I am running a 32MB TNT2 right now as I await my 6800 Ultra's shipping. You won't be able to play much, but it's worth it. Also, I really would reccomend having 512MB of RAM, no matter what the processor is, as memory really is one of the most important items to have quantity wise. I think that for what you are intending to do (HL1) that you should be fine with a lower processor and hard disk space.

However, a Socket 754 system can be had for just $100-200 more and you will have the Athlon 64 architecture, which is an insane improvement over anything else. The 2800+ Socket 754 model is a nice overclocker as well for only $120ish, I was able to squeeze 2.43Ghz out of it, from 1.8Ghz.

Anyways, good luck with your system!

$600 is way over my budget. Thanks for your help Jamie! I am not a very futuristic person!

If you live anywhere near a Fry's Electronics, watch their ads. They routinely run special combos that include a motherboard and an AMD CPU, such as a Sempron 2500+ for around $80. Most of the motherboards they include are ECS models, and some of them aren't worth the hassle, but others use an nVidia or VIA chipset, and they make excellent basic systems. The better boards include onboard NIC and at least minimal sound which you can upgrade as you want, later. They also regularly run specials on name brand RAM (Kinston, PNY, etc.), such as 512 MB for $50 - $60 after rebate.

If you're serious about gaming, you'll want more than a basic vid card, but since the price of the CPU, motherboard and RAM are well under your budget, you'll be able to afford a little more for that. 😎

Sounds great, but i can't find vendors to buy the 2400+ at a reasonable price. 🙁 i won't overclock though. bad idea when I overclock 386. lit on fire 🙁. I have Windows ME Full version that i never used too.

Bah! That rarely happens these days. 😉

Nick and Harvey make excellent suggestions. I'd also try to step up to the cheapest deal you can get on an Antec solution-series case because it includes an Antec Smart-Power power supply. (Generic/cheap PSUs cause stability issues; an Antec should not.)

Also, I don't know which OS you're using now, but WinME was practically dead the day it was released. Personally, I'd use Win 98 if it was a choice between that and ME. ME was that crappy! Of course, if you happen to have Win2000, use that, but plan on upgrading to XP as soon as you can.

Edit: Unless the deal on an OEM CPU is too good, get a retail box version of the CPU, which is usually only a few bucks more, but includes a good HSF.
