I'm building a go-cart with rocket boosters. OK, the rocket boosters are just an idea (plus I figured more people might read this thread) ... Right now, I am looking for some good sources to get blue prints and tips on building go-carts from scratch. I have a 10 HP and 5 HP motor, so I'll pick one based on the design. I'd also need some place to buy parts. Perhaps there's a retailer online dealing with this? Locally, I haven't had too much success as there's not too many outlets dealing with this.

One link I've found on my own that was quite interesting is at http://www.diyden.net/

I've been having trouble getting a decent price on an already built fram, suitable to my size... I'm 6 feet tall with a heavy build. I don't want to spend any more than $1000 on this project as I still have to save up for tuition. Tools are readily available, and I can even get welding done so there shouldn't be much stopping me from building my own. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Why build rocket boosters when you can just buy a rocket, duct tape it to a big wheel and be done?

Maybe you can rig enough model rocket engines to produce the thrust you need?

That's what I was planning on doing, use the model rocket engines... strap them on and use electronic ignition for extra boost. But first, I need the go-cart!

Thanks for the info. I'll try PMing Evadman.

As for insurance, I really don't think they'll cover me. It's like a pocket bike, except it isn't. I could just go out and buy one of the bikes, then soup it up, but I'd like to build something from scratch, and preferably with 4 wheels.

solid rockets? I don't think you'll be able to find anything with any thrust.. legally or cheap or whatever

O2 + kerosene. w00t.

Yea, I suppose the rockets wouldn't do all that much. Honestly, I was planning to run it using a gas-powered engine but that pulse cart looks really good right now.

Any idea where I might get kerosene + O2 ignitors on the cheap? =P

Ever since I drove an old man's scooter, I've thought a gas-electric hybrid might make for a pretty fun go-kart.

That old man's scooter only had a top speed of about 5 mph but it got to that top speed almost instantly. And go karts with a top speed of around 30 mph would probably accelerate the worst from 0-5mph...

So uh...you might want to look at somehow adding a battery if you want a little extra kick. It might be safer than those rockets ;)

Indeed!

One of my current projects is to hybridize my scooter... I want to be the first in the scooter community with a hybrid, 4-cycle scooter. :) lol...

I wonder how much boost a pair of SRB's attached to a 70,000 tonne ship would give. I'm sure there would be some vibration.

OK, like I said. I'm not really serious about doing the rocket booster thing. It's just an idea. Like say take 10 of those size C engines from a model rocket and strap them on the back of the go-cart... nothing any more insane than that.

BUT FIRST I need to build a go-cart! That's going to require regular types of plans. Something gas-powered. Hybrid would be great, except the battery and extra motor would take up space, as well I'd need some hybrid type power transfer from both motors. Good idea nevertheless, thanks for mentioning it =) ... I would like to keep it under $1000 if possible at all. I do have an engine ready, I just need a frame and other assorted parts, like a tranny, joints for the turning wheels, etc.

Perhaps mentioning rockets boosters was a bad idea... oh wait, what if I strap on a Saturn V ... no, that won't work will it? :roll:

Tranny huh? lol..

Yard karts' transmission consists of a centrifugal clutch and a chain.

A torque converter if you want to get fancy.

Personally I want to see you put a Dodge Viper engine on your go-kart... don't ask me how... you work out the logistics, I just want to take the photos & videos, until you crash into a tree.

@ Eli ... yea, that's basically what I was getting at. Clutch and torque converter. =)

Boze :: if you get me the Viper engine, I promise you that I will put it on a go-cart. I'll even make sure you get to test drive it.
