The barcode can't possibly contain more than the number.
I could read that with a CueCat scanner that Radio Shack gave away free a few years ago.

If you don't mind them writing it down, why would do mind them scanning it?

I just scanned my CA drivers license (regular barcode on the back) and it has an 8 digit number followed by another number (I think it might be the number representation of a letter A-1, B-2.. that is at the beginning of the license number on the front), then followed by the actual number on my license. Haven't figured out what the first part is..

Did you look at the link I provided? It's not a basic bar code, but a 2d bar code.

Hadn't seen your link yet. That's interesting.
I would be only slightly more concerned, however, b/c I think it only makes easier what they could already do with a DL#.

In VA, at least back in college, they would just type in your birthdate at the grocery store. I guess whenever they scanned alcohol, the computer wouldn't go any further unless you put a birthdate in, or something. Didn't swipe the card, tho.

Get a state ID card to complement your driver's license. That way you can give them the ID and not be hyper-paranoid.

they take all your info and make a database to sell to some marketing firm, then you start getting calls (i'm on the national DNC list, guess what, i still get calls) or flyers in the mail or whatever.

i dunno personally i don't think the grocery store needs all that info from me, but then i don't write checks so it's a non-issue for me.

Oh my GOD it's the END OF THE WORLD... Still not caring if people scan my ID or not... My ID gets scanned and I don't get solicitation phone calls or mail.

Actually, if I'm paying by check, I'm happier to provide my driver's license. It *is* for my protection to avoid people forging my name. Ditto for credit cards - I sign them (the card isn't valid, unless there is a signature) and write "ASK FOR ID." Photocopy the credit cards - if someone uses them fraudulently, you have proof that the store clerk didn't check the signature (which they're required to do.)

I agree with the shopper club cards. I have so many of those, it's ridiculous. Plus, I haven't got a clue what name I used on any of the cards. It's nice to have the card, and stores can give me coupons for things I buy often. But, I refuse to allow the store the ability to track my purchasing records (attached to my name) and sell that info. ex)Here you go, Mr. Insurance Company, a list of the types of food that everyone has been eating." "Hmmmm... Mr Smith seems to eat a diet high in fat. Let's drop him or raise his rates."

It is illegal for any store that gathers info from your license to sell it. Businesses in NH and TX cannot save the data at all from scanning your license.

I wrote check for ID on back of one of my CC. It wasn't valid at USPS and my local bar. But still asking for ID is a good idea. I shall never pay by check, I feel bad for everyone else in line that has to wait for a check transaction.

Heck the bar has no business scanning my license in their reader, but then this helps cut down on fakes. You already coughed up your info if you got one of those safeway club cards.

It still happens. It's only illegal if you're caught, unfortunately.

Yeah, they're going to call up my driver's license number, right?

make sure to pick up some tinfoil next time you are out, you need to make some hats.

When I take a check at work I have to write down the DL #, DOB, have the manager approve the check, then swipe the card through the reader. In Mi all we get is the dl number and proof that we had the license in the store. Them doing that is keeping costs down by not have to us veri-check or other services that charge a fee.

If you dont want stores to swipe your license you have a few options:
1. dont write checks (some stores still accept cash YMMV)
2. put a sticker over the barcode/strip
3. seppuku

I have a resonable right to keep certain things private. :|

A Grocery store has no business having my age, weight, SSN, height, hair color, eye color, address, organ doner information in any of their databases.

Add me to the club of WTF?
If you're not going to be committing crime where your identity might be crucial, what does it matter?
Your SS# is available in so many other places, Identity theft is just a matter of fact nowadays..
This is another reason to be up to your ears in debt.... If your credit is in the toilet, no one will want to steal your identity....

It's perfectly legal.

If you are REALLY worried about privacy, there are a MILLION things you do on a daily basis that compromise it.
Please stop whining, step back and take a look at the REALITY of what you do on a day to day basis.

You won't worry about a grocery story scanning yoru DL.
