I bought a Maxtor hard drive at compUSA and also there 1 year replacement guarantee. The drive is dying so I called to see how to replace it. They want me to pay $70 to have the files transfered from one drive to the replacement drive. That is such a scam.

I asked if I could bring both drives home and do it myself and then bring the old drive back and they could hold my credit card or something but there store manager said no, you must pay $70 for the transfer.

I hate CompUSA and I'm boycotting them!

dude just burn a copy of your hd, i hate to say this, but i think that compusa is right in part. imagine buying a new fridge, no one comes and moves your old food to the new fridge. although i must say 70 bucks is too much.

Will Maxtor honor the warrenty....they will cross ship.....they will ship you the replacement on your credit card, but won't charge it if you send back the defective drive in 30 days...

If you have nero, select HD backup.

It'll tell you about 22 CD's, but it'll do it.

<< $70 is ridiclous and I could do it for free in 45 minutes at home. So give me a break >>

Analogy:
You buy a new car
Engine dies
You take it back to the dealership
Takes them a week to put in a new one
They give you a rental car/suitable replacement while yours is in the shop
All is well

Why did they give youa rental car?
Because you paid extra for the warranty, even if you didn't know it.

This time with your HD, however, you didn't pay for it, and still didn't know it.
Don't be surprised.

You missed the best advice in the thread. Assuming Maxtor still does this (they did for me about a year ago), just go directly to the manufacturer and have them ship a drive out against your credit card. Copy the files over, and there you go.

I don't blame CompuUSA at all. They sold you a hard drive. They're replacing the hard drive. It's not their job to back up your files - it's yours.

....and you've discovered why all the compusa and bestbuy 'extended warranties' are money making scams. The better business bureau gets a huge number of complaints about these things every day. BB and other stores like it push their employees to sell the added warranties because they are such a huge ripoff that the company often makes more on the warranty than on the sale of the product.

Forget the stupid CompUsa thing in this case, just deal with Maxtor, they will honor their warranty, and they will cross-ship.

Viperoni,

Decent analogy - but the car dealership won't transfer your luggage and car stereo to your new auto. ;)

I would say as you are offering your CC as deposit, this is reasonable, they just want the 70 bucks to have some zit-faced kid image the drive. I side with you on this one.

Thanks UnixFreak glad someone thinks it's reasonable, I don't really want some zitfaced kid screwing around with it because who knows how data could be lost.

I went to the Maxtor site and they still have the RMA credit card shipping deal so I'm probably going to do that.

We would charge you $65 to ghost your drive. If you don't have a backup, it's nobody's fault but your own. No warranty covers data on the drive.

btw, did you run the maxblast diagnostics on the drive to verify that it was failing? with 3 os on the system, it might just be bloated with all the junk you've loaded on it.

I agree with UnixFreak, partially because I absolutely despise CompUSUCK. They like to push their "tech services" because it will take about $15 worth of "technician" (term used VERY loosely) time compared to $70 for the charge -- $55 in profit.

All they are going to do is RMA the drive back to Maxtor so it's not hurting them to have you keep it for a few days, guaranteed against a credit card. Typical of that place.

It takes longer than 45 min, and labour costs alot. Although $70 is quite high. Maybe $40 is reasonable.

Why boycott CompUSA? Just because of that? Get real dude.

Why did you buy a 1 year warranty that coinsides with the maxtor 3 year warranty?

Even the "compusa" branded maxtors have a 1 year warranty

I agree 100% with the thread title, just not with jacob's argument.

I haven't been inside the store in years and urge anyone who asks not to shop there. The mandatory 15% restock fee officially made them the "last place on earth" to buy computer hw and sw. ;)

Then you will be glad to know the sales people are now commision and dont make jack unless they tack on some type of Compusa warranty or service.

A little bird told me :)

The hard drive is failing, it clicks, clacks, clunks and stops spinning or grinds loudly so it is a physical failure.

BTW: It is the same thing that happened to an old Samsung hard drive I had which the Maxtor replaced.
