I'm both out of shape, and a nerd.

Ok, so I haven't excercised much lately. I've been feeling kinda weak. So, I decided I'm going to get off my ass and start doing something. I picked jogging, it's cheap, conveinient, and doesn't require a whole lot of training.

Anyway, I picked out a loop to run (nerd part is related to this, I'll get back to it) that I thought was about 2 miles. I tried running it for the first time today, and damn. I barely got the first mile done, then walked maybe 1/4 mile, then ran another half mile or so, and I was tired.... Anyway, there's these pull up bars on the side of the path, right near where I stopped running the second time. I thought I'd give them a try, I can barely do 2 pull-ups :( I walked the rest of the way back from the pull-up bar.

Here's the nerdy part: After doing this loop, I wanted to know exactly how long it was. So, I grabbed some aerial photos off mapquest, made a collage of them in Photshop, and drew scale marks on them. here's the picture. Each red mark is 100yards long, and each space between red marks is 100 yards long. The whole loop comes out to be 2.2 miles (+/- 5% or so.. and I'm not a bad guesser :)).

I barely did 1.5 miles.... I guess I'll get back in shape with more practice.

repeat until you can run the whole 2.2, then increase distance. Work on one thing at a time too. Jog in the morning, and lift at night...work out in the evening. That always worked for me. When I go back to school its gonna be run at noon then work out afterword...ill see how that turns out.

Unfortunately running isn't gonna make you any better at pullups. If you want to look better weights are more important IMO than cardio!

get a mp3 player or a walkman (have an older model). and take it easy the first few weeks. no need to sprint. nice slow comfortable pace and you'll be hauling arse in no time.

Cause I feel weak and tired, and get winded easily, a lot more so than I used to.

If you want to build up stamina, nothing is better than wind sprints. run about 100 yards and then spint as fast as your stubby legs can carry you until you burn out on the sprint. If your lungs are burning, that is a good thing. It maximizes the effeciency of oxygenating your blood and forces you to use all of the space inside of them too. Most people use about 60 percent of their lung capacity when they breathe by default. < (geeky example)...You will soon find that you have alot more energy and can run much easier within a few weeks. First thing on a cold morning is a great way to wake up.

Is there a specific rythm that is proper breathing, or just whatever I feel like that keeps it regular?

I find that keeping a slow and steady rhythm works best. Don't let yourself breathe too fast or you'll get a pain in your side.

I am out of shape, not that I was ever in shape. I've started running and I could use some pointers on that breathing. I find taking deep breaths is good.

same here. breathe in thru nose, breathe out thru mouth.. slow and steady.. or else personally, i get winded easily if i dont keep a rhythm.

Personally, I do deep breathing exorcises before I run for about 10 breathes. The technique is simple. sit down and take in a normal breath , not fast, not slow, but take it all the way down into the lungs untill there is a down ward pressure on the Diaphragm. this stretches the lungs, (so to speak) and gets them ready to work. It also maximizes you oxygen levels before you exercise, which helps you to feel more energized. When I can't run for some reason, then just doing those 10 breathes will wake me up as my body thinks it's getting ready to work.
