jvc or pioneer....pioneer if you want good sound quality, jvc if you want bells and whistles
What about a home stereo system?

I was browsing the stereos at Fred Meyer.. there were a couple I would consider, but I couldn't tell if any of them had surround sound. I want a stereo that I can hook up at least 1 more pair of speakers. I hate the bubbly look of most new stereos. I also hate the pre-set equalizers. :| What happened to manual levels?!

What can you recommend? Right now I have an old-ass Studio Standard by Fisher with 2 Intrada 10.3 cabinets each with a 10", 4" and 3" speakers, 30 - 20,000kHz, Crossover at 1.5 & 5kHz, 8 Ohms. It sounds OK, but it's really old.

I'd like to be able to use these speakers along with my new stereo, and possibly some other ones I have.

To find out if they have surround sound just look for the dolby digital label. As for the additional speakers just look for the a/b buttons.

I like Onkyo for receivers, great price and great features. I hear you on the preset EQ's, but most people want dumbed down receivers. You could always just run the receiver wide open and turn off the internal crossovers, and use external crossovers on each speaker, but that gets expensive.

Best alternative to Monster cable?

Acoustic Research....about 10% less at retail pricing, but same stuff as far as I can tell. Thats the cables that I use.

And who do you work for? BB?

I work for ABC Warehouse. Anyone in the Michigan/Indiana/Ohio area can tell you that we kill Best Buy around here. We are still a small chain, only 42 stores. Our big thing is that we sell EVERYTHING cheaper, and we actually know what we are talking about.

The clerks at Best Buy hate us!

Which would you pick from this list of higher-end speaker brands:

Bose
Boston Acoustics
Klipsch
Mirage
Sonus Faber
Vienna Acoustics

What's a nice set of decently priced tower speakers? As well, what's the advantage of Bi-polar rears compared to regular rears?(speakers 😉)

This I would like to hear an opinion on.

Another serious question: What's the difference between 16:9 and 4:3? They go down to the same fraction anyways. I don't see how different multiples correspond to widescreen/fullscreen.

OK, I have a question. When will I have $950 so I can buy my SVS PB2-ISD subwoofer?? My 15" Dayton DVC isn't cutting it anymore.

Dude, 4:3 does not equal 16:9
4*4 = 16 but 3 * 4 = 12 so the fractions aren't equal.

4/3 = 1.333...

16/9 = 1.7778

25% on electronics, 50% on speakers, TV's differ from brand to brand and depending on the size, but in general 30%
Depends, you can get 45% on TV (Mitsu RPTV). Sometimes, you can get up to 65% on speakers.

My VCR is currently experiencing some technical difficulty. Specifically the "white" of flesh tones is way high. I've tryed this on all the tapes at home and I am unable to unadjust it on the VCR and the TV. Any ideas of how to fix it??

BTW: we have a Panasonic PV-V4603s VCR and a HOME Theatre with a TON of wires and connections. Can that be the problem? Also our Sony 60" projection is going on the fritz lately

Well, since our resident expert don't answer this, I will. First of all, Bose doesn't belong there.
Sonus and Vienna has almost the same sonic characteristics (very bright). Klipschs are very dynamic speakers (good for rock fans), narrow sound stage (very directional). Boston Acoustics are good speakers, depends on what series, overall, very efficient and not too bright (I don't like too much highs). If these were my only choices, I'd go with Boston. I prefer Energy Veritas though. You can sample these speakers at Good Guys and Tweeters.

Buy a new VCR, they're a dime a dozen. Don't spend lots of money on a VCR, think disposable.

Oh... and another thing. The answer on Sony products are commission biased. Depends on what products you're buying, Sony has put lots of money into research and developement and have over the years come up with many innovations and features that is exclusively Sony. The reasons why most salesman will not recommend Sony is because the markup on Sony products are usually not much. Based on their sales and brand recognition, Sony do not care if they pay the salesman anything, because people will buy Sony, therefore if you ask a salesman, they'd almost never recommend Sony. In the eclectronice world, you generally get what you pay for, and if you shell out some money for the higher end Sony products, you'll get what you pay for and more. I now these things cuz I was a salesman.

So presently for my surround satalite speakers i have cambridge soundworks pc speakers hooked up to a sherwood reciever. I want to replace the rear ones with some wall mounted or bookshelf speakers. What would a good set to go with? Preferably i want to spend less that 150£ ($200?) on the two

*Edit* They must be available in the UK as well

I don't know what are available for you, depends on what your receiver is capable of, is it a digital receiver? Because if you have Cambridge PC speakers for fronts, then I would say that it is not important what you should have for the rear, anything that put out sounds should be fine.
