So I've reached the threshold of being forced to buy private healthcare I finally earn enough to be in that tax backet which is good, but now if I don't buy healthcare I'm going to get taxed an extra 1.5% to pay for Medicare (which is public health). Oh what a world!

Oh, and if you are hit by a car and were brought to the ER with no health insurance would they just let you die if you didn't have health insurance? No. So you really had some coverage you weren't even paying for.

Um... here in MA you pay a fine or have health insurance - period. Whether it's MA subsidized, private, or employer.

It's fairly easy for a US resident to make the mistake that you were referring to US Medicare, since it's a proper noun that sounds like it should be US specific. Even a well read American may not have heard of AU Medicare, as the media refers to another country's healthcare as 'healthcare', not the proper name. You assume too much when you assumed that he assumed.
