So I've reached the threshold of being forced to buy private healthcare :( I finally earn enough to be in that tax backet which is good, but now if I don't buy healthcare I'm going to get taxed an extra 1.5% to pay for Medicare (which is public health). Oh what a world!

WTF???? YOu are going to be taxed to pay for Medicare????? Please explain fully. Medicare is NOT public health. Geez, do people just make stuff up or what?
Next time try finding out about what your posting about.

Oh, and if you are hit by a car and were brought to the ER with no health insurance would they just let you die if you didn't have health insurance? No. So you really had some coverage you weren't even paying for.

Um... here in MA you pay a fine or have health insurance - period. Whether it's MA subsidized, private, or employer.

www.medicare.com.au all citizens and residents are entitled to medicare. it is public and it is free. unless you make a certain amount of money in which you are taxed 1.5% unless you have private health cover.

maybe you should do some research before you assume everyone is like you

No, he lives in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, which is basically an annexation of America as are all countries in the world so thus, he must be referring to America.

Not really read my mind but a glance to my left might have cleared things up. I didn't know AT forum members were so ethnocentric.

Maybe I should start every post by saying I am not American and I don't live in America would that be more beneficial? I could probably put an Australian flag as my picture and people still wouldn't put two and two together.

It's fairly easy for a US resident to make the mistake that you were referring to US Medicare, since it's a proper noun that sounds like it should be US specific. Even a well read American may not have heard of AU Medicare, as the media refers to another country's healthcare as 'healthcare', not the proper name. You assume too much when you assumed that he assumed.

Dunno what an Australian flag looks like sorry. I'd probably just think you were British.

Were you expecting someone else to pay your bills if you get hurt or become seriously ill?
