I got my monthly bank statement in the mail today and I'm being charged 23.90 for AOL that I never signed up for and dont know about? Should I call up AOL and see what is going on?

No. Instead you should just pay it and pretend that you never saw the charge.

Maybe you got lured into a newbie AOL scam?

I used to do this a lot when I was a heavy AOL'r too. I was 12 (6 years ago) and I made sites to lure credit card holders into giving me info. Yes I know it was wrong, but I was 12.

Anyway, just call them and have the account canceled and tell them you didn't even sign up. If they tell you you'll still be billed, then call your credit card company and have them dispute it.

Have you ever had AOL? If not call AOL's fraud department, (or whatever) find out how the account was created and if at all possible cancel it, then call your bank and tell them to refuse payment to AOL. This serves two purposes: stops AOL from charging you more, and stops whoever got your bank info from creating another account. Also, you may be able to get the bank and AOL together to compare info. If the person using the AOL account you're paying for is using a number nowhere near you it should be pretty obvious something's up.

this is absolutly retarded, the CSR from AOL and they said that when I purchased something (not sure from where) that they signed me up for a free AOL account and since then its been active. Can they sign you up for an account without you knowing it?

Unfortunately they can, but there has to be a lot of legal stuff covering it, and I think it has to be plainly obvious. What usually is hidden however is the clause that says if you fail to cancel your free account they can start billing you for a regular one. I think they got you on this one dude. Best to just pay the bill and ax the account as far as I know.

What'd they say you bought anyway? See if you can get the paperwork for it and check to make sure it lists the AOL bit in there.

They didn't tell me what I bought that signed me up for this aol account. I'm trying to talk to the fraud department on AOL to see if they'll give me my money back. I didnt pick an AOL screen name or anything and they still gave me the account?

Sounds like they messed up and are trying to cover their asses. Tell them they need to get the record of your purchase and until such time you won't be paying the bill. If they give you crap just tell them you believe you're being defrauded by someone else and until they can back it up you don't want to pay for something you didn't buy.

well I won the battle. I talked to the Fraud department and they said that I signed up through AOL.com someone stole my debit card and has used it to sign up for AOL. They will credit the 47.80 back to my account and that screen name has been terminated. They also said that this card will not be able to sign up for any new accounts. What a relief

Rock on, good for you! If you can ask them to notify you if they find the guy, since it's always nice to know when someone who's slighted you gets theirs. Oh, and change your debit card number. Not the PIN, the entire number. Talk to your bank's fraud department.

P.S. The reason why I say talk to your bank's fraud department is because they usually will do it for free if you have fraud protection.
