Quick rundown, I got to the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, and became a sophomore this year. I went to Sapelo Island, GA. We were digging at High Point Plantation. We started with the pre-post Civil War ruins, but soon discovered Revolutionary War and French (pre 1770s) houses. I was gone for 4 weeks and I was the only guy (besides my professor) and was with 6 ladies for the duration. (Not only was I the only guy, but I was also the youngest, being 19)...

THat really wasn't my goal. I did meet a really cool woman...She's in there, but I'm not gonna show which one...She loves hiking, camping, backpacking, etc, and we both love the same music and want to be archaeologist professionally...

Man, that looks awesome. Maybe I should of stuck with history instead of computer science.

It was a blast...I can't handle a desk job anymore. I tried, and it's currently killing me...I'm trying to get hired at a local contract archaeology firm to do anything...cataloging, surveying, really anything that will help me get experience and get my name out there...

I get to go to a lot of arch sites as part of my work. It's one of the best parts of my job. When I get there, the people working it will usually stop what they are doing and show me around, sometimes for hours. And yes, most of the diggers are young women.

That is one that really surprised me about the dig. For a long time, archaeology has been a male-dominated profession. I'm glad it's getting a new face. We had one group from the U. of Gainesville stop in and they instantly gravitated toward my supervisor and started hitting on her. It was humorous watching her shoot them all down...

Great way to get a tan too.
I spent 4 weeks last summer on a dig (some prehistoric remains, iron age, bronze age etc). Spending 7 hours out in the sun on top of a hill = great way to get a tan.
And there were hot chicks too, but no pics.

We were in really dense jungle, but every weekend we got to go to the beach...It was deserted every time but Memorial Day weekend...

And yes, the girl in the green is cute...

I think its great that you're getting field experience and you're learning first hand how to conduct the methods of your field. However, that "two thumbsup" self-affirmation-that-life-is-grand has to go before someone beats the daylights out of you.

Are you planning to go beyond America? Like, maybe digging in Turkey? Or safer still, Europe. I don't know how many ruins you'd find (probably a lot of artifacts if you dug in Germany), but I'd be interested in that.

Plus, I'm surprised there are any chicks at all interested in History.

Yeah, I know, but I was livin the dream...kind of our joke, but I know it's not all gonna be like that...:(

TehMac, I want to do Classical archaeology, but that is a super highly selective field, so I'm looking more and more into Latin American. Great field and still a ton of sites left.

And I love the women interested in this stuff. They're all really bright and great people. I had lots of fun hanging out with them...
