i purchased a barebones system and i've come to find that the performance, well, sucks.

i'm having problems figuring out what the problem could be but i've worked it down to possibly the motherboard chip combo. here's what i ordered:

p3 866 w/
spacewalker av-11 mainboard

i put a stick of pc-133, a 12gb ata-66 hard disk, an awe64, and an 8mb ati all-in-wonder.

i'm judging my performance on gaming, since i bought it to be a mame (emulator) box. testing the speeds here at work on my p3 800, i've found that my 866 is way slower. blast!!!

is this a bad combo of cpu/motherboard? or is this just user error? i've don't know what to think of next, and have almost given up. i may go get a new motherboard, but i have to way until next paycheck or a real last resort on tinkering.

thanks in advance.

How much ram did you install?

[edit]And how much is on the p3-800 box?[/edit]

Well, the 8 mb all-in-wonder may not be doing wonder for your preformance. What does the P3-800 use? Also, just because you have ppc133 ram does not necessarily mean it's running at spec. Check to see that there are not bios settings underclocking the thing. If you can provide a site for the mobo, maybe I can take a look. Try the 800's video card and see how it turns out, because until the radeon, ati cards were at the low end of the performance marker.

Regards.

I don't quite understand what it is you are doing, but if you are trying to play games with that video card you will be disappointed. It looks like the weak link to me.

the bios auto select the ram config for me, so i believe that is not the case. and sorry, what exactly is the mobo? :D

also, the ati all in wonder is all that i need for mame emulation. there is no 3d involved and most of the power is required in the cpu. as a matter of fact, 8mb is a lot for what i need to do. most people use 4mb.

check out the mame web site if you are interested. not important though.

i'm going to run a benchmarking tool tonight to see if that turns up anything particular about the system, otherwise, i still have to think that it has something to do with the motherboard/cpu config.

thanks for your help guys (oh and girls too!)
