I just sent out the following message:

Hi,

I'm just curious who this is. I registered user.name@gmail.com almost a year ago and only recently started using gmail on a regular basis. I toyed with the idea of using username@gmail.com (without the "period" in the middle) but realized that it was already taken.

So again, just a curious hello from someone one the internet with your same name.

I was surprised that this same email showed up in my inbox. At first, I thought that I had mistyped the email address but it turns out that I didn't. Gmail left me an interesting note in the "To" field: (Yes, this is you. Learn more.)

I'm an idiot.

This was a huge flaw in Gmail, if I recall. One could register the account without the period and gain access to your email.

Not a flaw at all. This was never a problem. I dd gmail beta first wave (ie invites to certain blogger users) and even at that point it knew user.name = username. This is a FEATURE.

No. There was a security vulnerability allowing users to register an account with a period if one without already existed. GMail corrected this later on.

So you are saying they got the code right, and then created a security flaw afterward?

No. The code was wrong to begin with, just no one noticed. Check the link above.

Some confusion is about, I may be mistaken.
