The reason why I don't want to get a 2GB or even a 4GB is because I will be recording video with my digicam. 2GB gives about 20 minutes. 4GB about 40min. 8GB about 80min. You may say, "well why don't you get a 2GB and then swap it out with another 2GB once it has reached capacity?"
I can't swap out cards underwater. I'm going to be snorkeling with this camera and taking video at the same time. I don't want to have to go to shore every 20 minutes so that I can pop open the underwater housing, swap out cards, and then close the casing again, hoping that it seals right. (It's usually a good idea to put the camera in the housing a few hours BEFORE it goes into the water).
But... it's not like I have a choice now. I just realized that the max capacity that my Panasonic TZ1 supports is 2GB. If I go for the TZ3, which supports 8GB SDHC, I lose the ability to zoom while recording, which is, uh, EXTREMELY important...
Grrrr... it's like camera manufacturers always take a big step forward but a huge step back.
TZ1: lens is not wide enough, but can zoom during recording and has no recording limit.
TZ3: lens is now WIDE! But it now doesn't have the ability to zoom during recording.
Canon S2/S3: GREAT video quality, can zoom while recording, but no underwater housing and limited to 1GB a clip, which is about 10 minutes.
Others:
DivX codec - 1GB stores a LOT of video, but manufacturers introduce too much compression, so the videos look really bad. So 640x480 video with the equivalent of 320x240 sharpness. Sweet. Thanks?
95% of cameras cannot zoom during recording.
Some can but there's always something wrong with them, like they only take 15fps or can only zoom when sound recording is turned off.
Consumer digicams infuriate me.
