I'm about to install a random OS, any suggestions

I just killed my w2k box, I have mandrake, solaris x86 and freebsd install cds ready

what should I go for, whats fun
 


If you are new to UNIX like me then probably the best would be Mandrake 8.1 (or something close to it) they released a beta 8.2, but I have'nt been keeping up with how good or bad it is. 8.0 and < have great hardware support and it is pretty easy to install. Just go with expert install, there are only a few more options, but they give you better control on how the system is set up. I would choose a journeled file system so that if your computer has to reboot with out being shut down, it won't take forever to check the file system.

I second Suppafly, get BeOs, the leaked 5.1 Dano version or even 5.0.3 Pro, maybe first you should try the free Personal Edition. If you have the bandwith to check this out do it, I posted this a little while back about the BeOs and why it is the best (IMO).

BeOS is cool but it's pretty much dead, Be Inc sold all their assets to Palm and I havn't heard a peep from Palm on what they plan on doing with it.

Avoid Solaris x86 unless you are sure you have 100% supported hardware (the HCL is very slim).
 
Nothinman you may be right that the BeOs is dead in it's present state but those of us who are fans of the OS are still hoping that the Open BeOs or better known as OBOS is going to great, and actually there is alot of talk about it going on right now, go check out the OSNews or BeGroovy forums.
 
i agree with Willoughbyva: go with mandrake 8.1 its the easiest for
us newbies. BUT i would do a default install, not expert , and regular
ext2 file system, which is also default. after your used to linux, then go for
expert installs with advanced file systems. you will find installing
and using 8.1 to be easy and will never go back to microsloth.

Evademan: I tried to install my copy of OS/2 Warp about 6 months ago and it wouldn't do it. I guess I need to get an older machine to mess with it. Still a great idea though. 🙂

matheusber you used to could get the Solaris 8 .iso images form Sun, they were very hard to find though but I found and downloaded them, but if I understand right Sun has discontinued the downlaods of Solaris 8 for Intel platforms, I believe you can still get it for the sparc stations though, or you can buy the intel version CDs pretty cheap I think about $50.
