....in all my years of lifting, doing dozens of different workout programs, reading countless of magazines, websites, and forums....why did no one ever tell me that if you hold dumbbells while doing push ups they're roughly 3x harder?

I've tried that. I've done fingertip pushups too. I've done many, many different forms of push ups...somehow I missed out on this one, and it seems to hit the chest harder than anything else I've tried.

(I'm not new to lifting, I don't know how I missed this before)

Maybe you're going down more? Kinda like if you do them on 3 chairs or 3 benches (one for each arm and one for legs).

Also I think because AREA of support is way smaller, and DB handles just push in your hands to point where it can hurt.

Are rings the things that hang down from the ceiling that gymnasts use? How do you do pushups on those?

sorta. the olympic / gymnast ones are much sturdier allowing for full swings and more aggressive movements.

I would call the rings we use more of fitness rings which are just straps (webbing) and the rings (mine are made of lexan). the set was bought from ringtraining.com. you don't necessarily have to hang them from the ceiling. when i take them to the gym, i hang them from the squat rack/cage.

see crt's post above for the videos. I would have linked to first video as well; love that one.

because you are going to get more out of doing bench press w/free weights than you will doing any amount of pushups.

Damn thanks for the advice. I've never done bench press before. You might have just unlocked what's been keeping me back all these years!

I used dumbbells for my pushups as they helped my wrists to not hurt while doing them. Then my wife got me a Push Up Pro set, and those work REALLY well. My chest and back. arms, and shoulders all get a good workout from using them.
