I've played and (up until a few years ago) watched sports my whole life. In recent years I've increasingly felt that keeping up with all the games and discussing the shit out of players and stats is a complete waste of time. Now my primary motivation to do so is to hang out with friends and to have an easy conversation topic with people. Even that motivator is fading, though. Is the idol worship of athletes getting to me? Do I just have better things to do? I dunno...

Is anyone else experiencing this? Most of the posts in this thread are from people who never really watched/played sports.

Yes, yes, plenty of other people feel like you. Also like you, they can't stop telling people about it.

Just like all the people who can't wait to tell you about how much ass their team is kicking or how what's-his-nuts got an injury that's going to tank their fantasy football team
Get a grip.

Shall I start threads about all the things that don't interest me? Just so i can tell people I'm not interested? And then not discuss it because it's not interesting to me? I've got a long list and it's starts with "what the hell nakedfrog thinks".

Aw, I'm glad you care enough to put me at the top

Welcome to the club. I feel the same way about sports, and no one understands. What really gets me is how much money these guys make having "fun", its freakin insane. Honestly I think you might wanna find some people who realte better to your idea of fun and hang with them instead.

What did you expect? They're mostly unathletic dungeons and dragons playing dweebs.

This commercial was made for them. They probably can identify with the beginning of it:

I hope you like music.

everyone at work is into some sport and most people i know are into one or another.
people are always talking about it, but the worst is if they ask you about it. makes me feel odd, like i'm not normal or something.
I watch sports sometimes, but almost never talk about them. I watch some golf ('cause I play it), an occasional football game if I'm interested for some reason, but I won't watch a game just to see a game most times. I haven't watched a baseball game in a real long time. I might watch some of the playoffs, though. It's a higher level of competition.

I watched a lot of the Olympics, but I hate what NBC does with the coverage, have for years. It could be so much better.

When I watch sports (or just about any TV), I timeshift and FF through most all of the commercials. There's a few good commercials, but mostly I don't want to watch commercials. If you watch TV, DVR is your friend.

I'll occasionally stream shows from Hulu or Netflixx, but to put it simply my TV hasn't been even turned on for anything other than a DVD or a video game in the entire past year. One time a poll service called me up and asked how many hours of TV I watch per week, I said "none - I don't watch TV". He paused for a moment and asked me "You don't watch TV!? Do you own a TV?", I responded with "yes I own a TV, but I don't watch it" to which he sounded shocked.

I don't mind playing catch with the football though, that's the funny part. I can go out with my buddies and toss the football around for 2 hours until I'm drained of energy, then not watch a single football game unless I'm at someone's house who happens to be watching it.

Same here, but I have quite a few friends that doesn't watch TV now.
Plenty of entertainment and shows to watch online.

Friend: He had this ....

and it goes on from there.
T.O. was made for Texas. People around here (49er territory) tended to find him obnoxious (not me, however). He likes to showboat, and I really don't care. He delivers and then makes a scene. I haven't watched him recently, but I've found many other players' antics much more obnoxious.

I'm not really into football. I'll watch a big game from time to time, but I'm not that into it. Now basketball? I love basketball, I'm a basketball junkie, mainly NBA but college as well. I'm literally counting down the days until NBA training camps starts.

Basketball is big fun to play. I like watching the NCAA tournament. It's very for real, so much more so than the NBA, where you get the feeling that the players extend professional courtesy to each other a lot of the time. Much of the time NBA players seem to be going through the motions. I don't subscribe to a service, so not much NBA TV is available to me, but when I check it out, it turns me off. Except maybe some of the playoffs.

Not really, I guess it went right by you, but this is real. Except MMA = ? Mixed martial arts? What's that, anyway?

NFL is pretty for real, and damned impressive. I'll not forget a quote I read in the paper some years ago and I'll paraphrase it:

"I've met a lot of famous people and generally been unimpressed. But if I ever met Joe Montana I'd get down and kiss the floor on which he walked."
