So my Army career is coming to an end in about 7 months, and I'll be returning to college with less then 1 year of school complete. Back in 2001 I had a full ride scolarship to play as a starter with NJIT, and ended up leaving on a "medical withdrawl" which basically meant that I never slept and got sick from not sleeping.

For those of you that don't know, which is probably most of you, there are only about 50 division 1 and 2 teams out there, so this was a big deal for me. Anyways, the next year I played on a club team which was slightly lower competetion. Anyways, one of the guys on the team is now a starter for Loyola. Back when we played together I was easily at or above his playing level.

So would I be insane to tryout for college teams in 2008 or 2009? I don't think so. I'm in far better shape right now at 24 then I was at 18.

Do it. It sounds like something you're really passionate about, and you might regret not doing it in the future.

I mean, you had the balls to buy a VW, and you're contemplating this? :p

Why are you leaving the Army? I was saying just the other day that I'm 24 and I still have dreams of joining the service... ;)

Is there an age limit for college sports?

Volleyball is where it's at, I approve of this thread.

If you are already going back to school, go for it, you've got nothing to lose unless NCAA says you're too old or something.

My enlistment is up. I'm still considering a career as an officer after college. No idea if there is an age limit, although I remember seeing some older players in college football games.

What about NCAA rules? If you enrolled in school in 2001, wouldn't your availablility be up? Go for it if you can though, that would be great!

doesnt the army also have an incentive of free college?

My GI bill will pay me almost $1,000 a month for 36 months of school. And if I end up going to an Illinois public school I get free tuition as a veteran.

The NCAA houses three of the four college leagues under one roof. The NCAA I is the largest and also strongest division, in which the most and the biggest universities play. There is an age limit of 24 in the NCAAI.

Smaller colleges and universities play in the NCAA II, and the range of ability is also somewhat bigger here. In contrast to the NCAA I, there is no age limit, however, there is a limit on how many semesters you are allowed to have studied.

Universities in the NCAA III do not award scholarships like universities in the other divisions, but there are still coached teams at your disposal. The NCAA III is the weakest division.

There are possibly exceptions for military service on the age limit thing. And there are two nearby division 2 teams. I guess the worst thing that happens is that I just play club volleyball forevor.

play, but dont do it for the glory..... mens team is awful along with almost every other sport there unless having season records of like 3-18 sounds good to ya. girls tennis and baseball are the only ones surviving.

If you enrolled in college full-time, I think the clock starts running for your NCAA eligibility. Usually, you have 5 years to play 4, which gives you one season to redshirt, if that happens in volleyball.

Unless the NCAA has some rule about quitting college for military service and not losing your eligibility.

Why not?

I had no idea that men's collegiate volleyball existed. My advice? Work at it with all you've got and then transfer those skills into professional beach volleyball. Those dudes seem like they're arm deep... ;)

Me too. Those Pro Beach Volleyball tournaments come here, and draw big crowds. The top players earn big money, and appear to enjoy a great, healthy and exciting lifestyle.

I don't know how long a pro career can go on, but maybe well up into your 30's, maybe 10 -15 more years of playing time.

I've heard they even travel inland to play in sand pits, say maybe in Michigan or somewhere. Anyhow, they travel around.
