Better question is why a person is getting a FOURTH LIVER TRANSPLANT. These do not grow on trees, time to cut losses, nobody else could use one? For God's sake, she is screwed, stop wasting other people's potential lives on constant transplants.

Face it, we're both playing God here I see no good reason that the liver in question couldn't have just as well saved the live of a legal resident.

The families of nine people who died while waiting for new organs from the University of California at Irvine liver transplant program have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the school.

It's especially nice to know how grateful she is:

"It doesn't matter if I'm undocumented," she said. "They should take care of me at UCLA for the rest of my life because I've been there since I was a baby."

Isn't that grateful of her. We've saved her life 4 times and now she's bitching we haven't done enough for her!?!? 47 million people can't afford insurance in this country, but I'm sure they will all understand that we can't seem to be hateful by denying people here illegally expensive medical care further running up the costs of insurance so even more people can't afford it.

When there are more people who need organ transplants than organs available, somebody has to play God. I am fine with the way God worked in this example, based on ethical guidelines laid out by the medical community. You think your god can do better. I don't think I need to be driven snow not to like your god. A human being is a human being to me. And imagine you had a job where you get to go into a dying patient's room to say, Geez Mary, we have a liver for you but I've called the coroner instead. We are letting you die because your not a US citizen.

I guess I believe I'm just as qualified to play God as the next guy.

After 1 or 2 failures I'd think one should stop to consider what is causing that, then cure whatever it is. Not just mindlessly keep plopping in new livers at half million $ a peice.

My father had a heart-valve replaced in 2006, and the total billed cost of the medical services (including rehab) was about $350,000. But Medicare paid only about a third of that amount. I assume everyone still made a profit on the $120,000 actually paid out, even considering that a portion of the $120,000 is budgeted to help pay for the medical costs of uninsured patients.

So I suspect that that $490,000 has a true "wholesale" cost of less than $100,000.

Another thing to remember is that this is a fringe case. Boys and girls, your attitudes should be based on the norm, not on the 4-sigma cases.
