PHOENIX — An illegal immigrant shot after allegedly pointing an assault rifle at a Maricopa County sheriff's deputy has died.

Authorities say 43-year-old Felipe Ramirez Castellanos died Monday at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix. He was shot late Friday night outside a home in east Mesa.

Sheriff's officials say Castellanos was shot once in the head and once in the hip after he pointed an AK-47 at a deputy responding to a domestic violence incident.

The Arizona Republic says Castellanos served 90 days in jail for a human-smuggling charge in 1986.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio says the 26-year-old deputy has been with MCSO five years. Arpaio won't identify the deputy but says he's been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.

Arpaio also says the deputy took "proper, professional action."

I fully expect to hear a lot more about this in the coming weeks, I'm a Phoenix resident. Might be some illegal immigrants and students bussed in from California to protest like when SB1070 was sitting on the governor's desk.

It is sad that someone died, but the deceased was 1)A criminal, both currently and in the past, and 2)Pointing an assault rifle at an officer of the law is never a good idea.

The police were at his house is response to reported domestic violence report. And he did point an ak-47 at a police officer...

I am sure Arizona has a similar statute... making the guy a criminal. We will also include the fact that he was an illegal immigrant... making him a criminal.

This person who you don't feel should be called a scum... was also in the processing of leaving his driveway with the ak-47 and plenty of ammo.

Well, when you combine that with the very minor issue of him pointing a rifle at law enforcement who was responding to a domestic violence call...... Yup, criminal scum. Thats not even getting into the entire illegal immigrant issue.

And the rest of the industry needs to follow suit.
I am so fucking tired of everything in Spanish nowadays. It amazes me that in a country full of so many cultures we got by with English everywhere for hundreds of years.
Now just because we are being filled up with spanish speakers (mostly illegal aliens who breed like bunny rabbits by the way) that all of a sudden we are obligated to put spanish all over the place.
