Now 20, attending a community college and hoping to earn a degree in international studies, Sanchez worries she won't find a job when she graduates because she doesn't have a Social Security number.

Like other young people across the country, she's pinned her hopes on the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, also called the DREAM Act. The proposal is before Congress, and would give undocumented youth an opportunity to become legal U.S. residents.

Sanchez is one of thousands of young people who have come out of the shadows to lobby for the bill -- exposing themselves to the risk of deportation in the process. "I would just like people to understand what we're going through," she said. "We're not coming here to take advantage of this country ... We love it and all we want to do is make it better."

Simply amazing.

Why is this amazing? I would do the same. ever been to mexico and seen some it's border towns abject poverty? Went to Calpoly SLO with a guy, illegal, getting his MS in EE..wondor hows he doing today.. He took a surfboard from ensenata mexico to san deigo.

GO HOME! Reapply legally to do something worthwhile in this country, and she MAY get a job.

Actualy, we have a legitimate claim to live in america since we [mexicans] are part native american, and also remember that alot of the land in the south west was stolen from mexico/mexican tribes [apache etc] and its in the southwest where most of us live now, so your claims of "illegal immigrant" are wrong-its like saying the palestinians shouldnt live in israel even though the palestinians native land is israel.

How do you know she not paying taxes? Does she have a job? She pays. Ever buy anything taxable? She pays. Pay rent or mortgage? she pays. As for crimminal that's just ridiculus there is no crime here its a immigration violation on not even on par with a misdomeanor traffic ticket as far as fines or time. Don't believe me? call INS on a illegal and see the response you get.

There's not enough greencards for all the mexican that want to be here so you're naive idea about legally applying is a pipe dream. open the borders like with nafta but for people is the only fair way.

It's a weird situation... they probably grew up their entire lives here, consider themselves American, probably couldn't even get along with people back in their "native" country if they were sent back.

Can you imagine if one day the government just came to your door and said that you were actually never born here, that your parents smuggled you from Russia or something (just an example) into this country so you had to go back? You don't know the language, culture, etc.

if i could take advantage of tax paid programs without paying taxes myself i would like it too.

of course being on the other side of the fence and supporting the education of illegal aliens with my taxes while i struggle to pay for my own son's education tends to make me less than sympathetic.

it is not my fault their country sucks, it IS thiers though, it seems to me if they truly loved thier country they would stay and work and sacrifice to improve it! but i am sure taking the easy road and mooching off another country would be easier. i can understand. if we let it continue it would be our fault, not theirs...they are simply looking out for themselves. if we do not we have only ourselves to blame.

Ever notice "illegal immigration" became a problem as soon as it was brown immigration? For hundreds of years europeans came here unresricted..hell my parents came in the early 60's and applied for everything while here and got it all. Seems to have changed shortly after that when the brown and yellow man cometh.

You may have a point. It is certainly correct that at one time Immigrants were welcomed with open arms. Here in Canada and I suspect it true of the US also, Immigrants were once offered free land, all they had to do was show up.

I think it cooerlates directly to when the third world and non-white countries got into air travel..in the late 60's early 70's. IMO there certainly is racial overtones. If 50,000 germans moved here no one would take notice even plunging down in the same city, but 50,000 Nigerians? or 50,000 Cambodians? I think most would attract negative reaction. People are still bitching about the murial boat lift from cuba and they are almost white.

well, are asians brown? we got restricted long before mexicans became a problem

and its not entirely true. people like the irish weren't considered much better then brown people. they had higher quotas then asians, but they certainly weren't unlimited. and they had to actually pass through the brutal immigration system.
