Ikernel.exe XP Reinstall Error

Ikernel Error
I was reinstalling XP on my PC, because of two years of updating and installs over old systems. I did a clean install over a reformatted HD. When I was installing new video drivers and certain other sw, I get the following error: The errors seem to come up with any video or sound app installs.

"Ikernel.exe Application Error"
"The instruction at "0x771c741a" referenced memory at "0x001694d0" The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate program"

The system is a home built ASUS A7V333, with an AMD 2400, ATI AIW 9700Pro, SB Audigy Platinum, 512 Megs memory running a WD 1200JB HD.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on how to fix this error.
