IKernel.exe freezes - installs/uninstalls difficult!

Hiya - I've got a problem I can't seem to figure out here. Running Win2k-SP1, fairly stable (for MS!) for over 2 years now, but getting a bit crufty around the edges... anyhow, various video-related functions (including Firewire) have been getting flaky of late, so I decided to upgrade from my older All-in-Wonder Pro to a Radeon AiW-8500DV recently. (I also run an old ATI Xpert@Work PCI card for a 2nd monitor)

The card works fine to display basic Windows stuff, but I can't seem to install most of the software suite (the remote control driver, TV/video control panel, etc). The standard install procedure just halts after the InstallShield bit; after waiting awhile, I check Task Manager and IKernel.exe is taking 99% CPU. When I end the process, I get an error like "RPC call failed" (probably 'cos I stopped the process). I've tried installing the various pieces of the software suite separately; a few of them work fine, but most exhibit the same behavior. I've tried deleting extant copies of IKernel.exe from my C:\ drive, but no joy.

Weirder still, I've got a second, relatively pristine Win2k installation on a different partition that I've been intending to use to make a fresh working environment (2+ years is a bit long for a single Windows install, after all). I tried installing the software on that, and I get the same problem! In fact, I can't even UNinstall the old ATI software suite on there - 'cos that seems to require IKernel.exe too...

Google searches on IKernel.exe probs come up with situations where an actual error message is displayed - mine just freezes until I halt it. I'm hesitant to tinker randomly with my system as I depend on it for my income (such as it is...), so I'm hoping someone can shed some light on the situation. I got the card used, so I'm not really eligible for free techsupport from ATI, and besides it doesn't seem like it's a problem with their particular software - InstallShield is used almost everywhere. And I've had a few similar problems in the recent past with installs, though none vexing enough to bother checking into until now.

Ideas?
