I just got back from Ikea. A new one opened up in Philly (on Columbus Ave if you haven't been paying attention to the construction) and it was a fricken zoo. They gave away a free $150 Poang chair to the first 100 customers at 9am, some people started camping out Monday. I was content with my free frisbee at the door at 10am. My roommate and I picked up some essentials for the dorm room this year.

Futon
This is about the most comfortable place to sleep you can get for $159. That and the wood frame is only $39 so if we happen to break it, its not difficult to replace.

I also got a loft bed so the futon can sit under it, but unfortunately ikea's site is down right now.

Perhaps my favorite part of the trip was the $1.99 breakfast special that was eggs, potatoes, and bacon. Decent eggs too, especially for the price.

Anyway, um, so Ikea is an interesting place, I wish I could pronounce the names of some of their furniture though.

my wife likes to shop there a lot, once every few months or so. at one point i was at home looking at the catalogue and crap, i realized that our living room looks a whole heck of a lot like page xx.

and like i said in another thread a few weeks ago, it's not likely that there will ever be one in WI, because they already have one near chicago, and they just opened up one in minneapolis.

Ikea is alright for some stuff. But doesn't seem to last. I had a dresser that fell apart.

Shaumburg's not that far away. My Entertainment center is from Ikea. Fits the 42" plasma nicely.

When we go down there we always shop till they close and then eat at Bernelli's. Mmmm, it's been awhile since we have gone, I think this thread has inspired a road trip.

It's good to see that Ikea finally openned. I just rode by it the other night and it still looks like a lot of work needs to be done to the place. I guess they openned the doors ASAP despite the remaining mess.

We have had shelves from Ikea since I was a little kid (I remember playing in the ball room they had there while my parents bought the shelves). I guess 15 years is pretty good for shelves piled with tons of crap.

Like most things though, you get what you pay for. Ikea offers midpriced products that are quite nice, but they also offer inexpensive stuff that might just fall apart. If you treat it with care I'm sure it'll be fine, they don't sell complete crap, but my futon is just a pile of wood, literally. I knew what I was getting when I bought it, and if you go to a store you ought to be able to figure out if what you buy is going to last or not.

indeed. ive had one for years, its fantastic... Bow to the Poang!

Edit: While the Poang rocks, I had a futon that i didn't like as much. but as has been said, i got it cuz it was cheap, and as such, it was a great buy. just went out and bought a queen size bed with a big poofy mattress... as a bed, it pwns the futon into next week. it just takes up a crapload of space

Ikea has great stuff for apts and other temporary spaces... but since they carry flimsy-er furniture than other places, much of their stuff doesn't belong in a regular home. We have one right down the road and we end up only buying things like small lamps and corner tables. A futon would be the biggest thing I'd pick up there... maybe.

Different stores have different stocks. All depends on how large it is.

I believe the website is just a reflection of the in store stock. They should be exactly the same (plus many more knick knacks that I don't think the website accurately reflects, such as 6 shot glasses for $3 that I saw earlier).

Ikea is awesome. Sometimes my friends and I go there just to look around and eat their meatballs (which are extremely delicious).
