IIS is screwing with me

Ok this is partly IIS and partly other stuff. Not really sure what's causing all of it.

1) Loaded IIS5 on a WinXP Pro SP1 box (with .net framework already installed). Installation went fine, though i cannot run IIS manager. When i click the shortcut in admin tools it loads "mmc.exe" but i don't see anything popup. Not really familiar with IIS under Xp....i'm used to going to IS Manager in win2k and configuring everything from there. I assume IIS manager is the same thing in XP.

2) ever since i installed IIS, I can't bring up any folder properties. I can view file properties, but can't view them for folders. Which also means i can't view/change sharing/permissions. I select it from the menu and nothing happens. (just like problem #1)

3) Windows update appears to be freezing when trying to update the .net framework and IIS security patches. It downloads fine, but freezes on installation.

Any ideas?

What happens when you apply the IIS Lockdown tool? Have you already applied the Nimda patch?

The IIS activity was really weird. I had tried to apply the nimda patch but it wouldnt let me install it. So I left for work this morning leaving NAV to scan for nimda. When i came back i had a BSOD. I restarted and when i started it back up, i was able to view folder properties again. IIS manager now works, and when i went to windows update, it said that the security update no longer needed to be installed. Which is weird because in the history it says absolutely nothing about installing the security updates. It just says that it had failed 3 times. No mention of successful update. So I installed misc patches but am still worried. NAV reports NIMDA is nowhere to be found, but its not exactly comforting at this point....if i did have NIMDA, it didnt pick it up the first time.

Haven't applied lockdown tool yet...still installing updates and patches.

Are you sticking with strictly WindowsUpdate? Or did you do a search specifically for "Nimda" on MS' website? I'm wondering if there are other utilities that aren't critical enough to make it into WindowsUpdate that you may find useful.

Your best bet is to try and uninstall/remove IIS completely, and then reinstall it.
