The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety?s latest study indicates that side-impact airbags can reduce road fatalities by as much as 45 percent in cars so equipped. The insurance industry-funded group reports that side curtain airbags are the more effective type; through data interpretation the IIHS reports that side airbags that do not protect the head, only the chest and abdomen, can still reduce deaths by 10 percent. The IIHS says its study is the first of its kind for the new type of airbag, which helped some sport-utes finish well in the group?s last rollover and crash tests as well. "Before head-protecting airbags were available there was virtually nothing to prevent people's heads from being struck by intruding vehicles or rigid objects like trees and poles in serious side impact crashes. Now we know side airbags can change this and do a good job of protecting heads," said Institute president Brian O'Neill in a release.

That's cool! So the combination of side & curtain REALLY DOES make a difference. Nice to see some actual results on that.

Would a side airbag really be able to prevent this sort of injury?

Sure, why not? What's another couple hundred airbag deaths among friends?

Riiiiiight. How many people die in airbag deaths, and how many die in side collisions? If you get broadsided by an SUV, I think airbag death will be the last thing you need to worry about. I think side curtain airbags, side airbags and ABS need to be mandatory on all cars sold in the US, just like front airbags and seatbelts are.

I think I saw that article before.
It's a good one, but I thought she only mentioned front airbags deploying. I guess the side ones would work similarly, though.
I was thinking of a more pointed object puncturing the side ones, but that would probably be extremely rare.

OK, you're right. In fact, I think we should take it a step further. We should make make ejection seats standard in every car. The instant a collision is detected, the roof pops off, your rocket propelled seat pops you out, and you slowly parachute down to your car. I'm sure the cost won't be too bad. And even if a few hundred people die and thousands more are injured in the first version, that's worth it! Yep, no doubt about it.

you want it, you buy it on your own. don't mandate it for me. i bet you're the type that supports mandatory helmet and seatbelt laws too. :disgust:

You are quite the drama queen, aren't you? Side curtain airbags and ABS are inexpensive safety devices that save lives. If they are required on every car, the costs will come down even more due to volume. Now if you want to offer some diversionary arguments that make no sense, keep doing it.

Will American cars be allowed to be equipped with Side airbags?😛

I am!

Lucky, what fuggin' idiot is against helmet laws??

I never understood why some opted out of getting side airbags. If you're getting a $30k+ car, what's another $500 option?

I have side airbags, and I won't own another vehicle without them.

Don't want em in mine... if I'm dumb enough to hit someone that hard I must be dangerous and I don't deserve to drive on the road anymore..

Getting the hint here 😉

What if someone in a jacked up 4x4 Suburban t-bones your Silverado at an intersection? I'd hope you'd want a side airbag and head curtain airbag to stop your skull from cracking up against the door frame.

If you don't...more power to you Superman! 🙂
