Are you referring to CS?

As much as I can't stand the game, its insanely popular. People still play it now, years and years after it should have died.

If you're talking about CS I'm assuming you've never played it.

Name: Contra
Platform: Arcade, NES
Developer: Konami
Publisher: Konami of America
Year Released: 1988
Why it Made the Top 100 List: The quintessential side-scrolling shooter, Contra defines what an action game was like on the NES. Even though you can only shoot in eight directions and everything in the game is pattern based, it's still a great game to play through to this day, and it's still hard as $&*%. As a bonus, Contra also has what is arguably the most famous and recited cheat code ever.

Come on guys, it is a test. Just seeing if you still know it.

Wolfenstien 3-D should have been higher and where the heck was Age of Empires II, Quake II, Unreal Tournamant and Total War series games

It wasn't that bad. I was impressed that Pirates! was mentioned, but disappointed that WASTELAND seems to have been overlooked.

Yeah, the game's 'plot' was sh!t, true, but...

- seamless, trouble-free network play for 2-4 players via serial or LAN (starting in 1.2 Registered)
- creating the game in such a way as to facilitate the ability to easily modify and expand upon a game and all its facets--graphics, sounds, maps, etc. (began with Doom Editing Utilities released in March '94, a few months after Doom Shareware)
- and a beautiful engine (for '93) that certainly paved the way for the fluid, dynamic and realistic graphics we expect in all of today's FPS'.

Nothing I'd consider 'innovative,' right?

You misread it. In my opinion, doom should be #1, if not in the top 3. Quake and some other games that I have in mind in the top 10, of course.

Sorry, my bad. :)

I didn't play Quake until after Quake 2 oddly enough (I somehow survived creeping along with a 486SX/25 until mid-1998), but can still appreciate the huge breakthrough its engine certainly was. That alone should warrant it a decent placing on any 'Top 100' list. Then there's its large-scale multiplayer aspect and clean interface for LAN/net play with soon-available--& free--add-ons (QuakeWorld) and a mod community that in no time expanded exponentially (in numbers and expertise) upon Doom's large and loyal following.

Still, 'Super Smash Bros. Melee?!' Can't get over that... :disgust:

Yeah, really. And wtf, mario bros being #1? Sure, it was a cool console game at the time, but did it really change the way an entire genre is played? Even then, the FPS genre is the largest of them all from what I know.

If by "few enhancements" you mean... a full 3d world, much improved graphics (OpenGL in some cases), innovative online play, etc etc... ;)

Major props for listing Virtua Tennis on the list. They recognize a special game when they see one. Why Super Mario World 2 but no Super Mario Bros. 3?

I was definitely relieved to see X-Com on there. That game is still insanely fun, years and years later, after beating it 15 times. If they could do an X-com today that paid homage to the original but was updated, it would be a hit.
