ignorance at it's finest

I don't want to offend anyone with the following post. Also, I'm not American.

Now with that out of the way, let me get to the real story.

I was reading the morning paper today, with the headlines indicating that a certain nation with a 3-letter initial was getting it's first colored president.

I mentioned that to my mother who was VERY surprised. By the fact that he was the first one. According to what she believed, Abraham Lincon was the first non-white president.

That SHOCKED me. Among all people, him?!?

Some 5 mins later, I got the story out of her. Turns out that she heard that he fought for black rights and thought he was one of them.

Guess that's one way to describing his famous beard and mustache...

Anyone have any more ignorance stories to tell ?

Pretty much. Obviously more people will know the histories of countries which have been major players on the world stage, but few will know them in any detail.

Now I'm getting confused. According to the Wikipedia picture he looks white to me.

How can you say he's black? Unless you are referring to his hair...

Your mother isn't the only person to believe Abraham Lincoln was black or had some black ancestry.

Author Dr. Leroy Vaughn in his book "Black People and Their Place in History" writes, "Lincoln had very dark skin and coarse hair and his mother allegedly came from an Ethiopian tribe. His heritage fueled so much controversy that Lincoln was nicknamed "Abraham Africanus the First" by his presidential opponents and cartoons were drawn depicting him as a Negro."

for what it's worth, I couldn't even tell you if India has a prime minister or president without looking it up.

as far as stories about ignorance goes... my friend's wife is possibly the dumbest person I know. there was one night a couple years ago when the whole gang of us were in Rhode Island watching a meteor shower. the subject came up regarding what we were actually seeing, how it worked, etc, and through the discussion, we learned the wife of my friend was unaware that the earth revolved around the sun, not the other way around :Q also, she's a teacher.

a lifetime of catholic education at work.

I want the name of the paper that referred to Obama as a "colored" president.

A couple years back I got into quite an argument with a fellow who swore that Canada was the 52nd state. He couldn't remember the 51st. He also claimed to have a collage degree.

He probably ate too much of the paste.

😕

Apparently you dont understand that the rest of the world does not have a deep-seeded guilt, or the desire to be super-PC. Words/actions that cause faux-outrage with people in the US do not necessarily do the same to the rest of the civilized world. (See: Spanish Olympic Basketball Team last summer).

The best fools are the ones who fancy themselves smart. I love it when people start spouting off facts trying to sound smart, but completely talking out of their ass.

Non-Americans knowing a shit ton more US History than some Americans really impress the hell out of me.

I couldn't name one Indian president.

I run into a lot of them. When I mention I work in physics, every waiter, barista, bus rider, whatever becomes an instant expert in quantum mechanics. They don't realize that they have a layman's understanding of metaphysics, not real physics.

He is black like Michael jackson... a skin "condition".

As far as it goes, the EXACT wordings were "FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT" of something along those lines. I was attempting to be discreet. I think I failed. -sigh- (Big Time)

About India, if you so some net reseach you'll find that the Indian Persident is nothing more than a rubber stamp. Everything is done in his name and all he does is put his signature on bills when he's told. The buy with REAL power there is the Prime Minister.

Now about who the current ones are, ... where is that Wikipedia link? hmmm ... 😛
