WASHINGTON (AP) -- Staff members at an agency that oversees offshore drilling accepted tickets to sports events, lunches and other gifts from oil and gas companies and used government computers to view pornography, according to an Interior Department report alleging a culture of cronyism between regulators and the industry.

In at least one case, an inspector for the Minerals Management Service admitted using crystal methamphetamine and said he might have been under the influence of the drug the next day at work, according to the report by the acting inspector general of the Interior Department.

Yup. The federal government was sure doing their job at that off shore rig.

There have been scandals about MMS and it's cozy relationship with the industry for years. I recall a thread here from a year or two ago on the topic. As I recall the scandals were on the revenue side (collection and contract awarding).

Breaking the MMS into two entities-revenue and enforcement-is an excellent first step. Hopefully it's followed up with meaningful reform.

The meth allegation is something new to me.

Clearly the answer is more regulation. We need to double the number of meth addicts surfing porn and going on company funded outings. That will solve these problems.

On the other hand, you could say that these types of disasters would happen much more often if not for government safety regulations. The oil and gas companies wouldn't even need to pay off the inspectors with gifts - they could just build cheap, half-assed wells without any worry of fucking up.

Did the article mention that the latest spill was a direct result of a meth addict and porn on the computers of the inspectors, or are you guys just trying to say "SEE! Government IS bad!"?

There is drug use everywhere. It's not a Republican or Democrat thing, and it certainly is not a conservative or liberal thing.

Meth use is so pervasive in the trucking industry that it's a big joke. Next time you see a DUI checkpoint look to see if there are any commercial trucks or big rigs being pulled over.

There will now be the speechifying hand-wringin' Amen corner coming out of congress whining and crying and then once the dust settles they'll go back to other matters.

Hmmm. I remember the SEC having a similar problem and they also didn't do their job.

I can't wait until the next report, which will probably indicate the number of illegal immigrants who were involved in the enforcement of regulations on this platform...

How about the report on how much the Obama campaign has gotten paid to look the other way on these regulations?

Oh please get the fuck over yourself. What you fucks won't own up to is that your boy W, discouraged every federal agency from the EPA, SEC on down the line from actually doing their job, that's a fact.

This is the classic right-wing bullshit, you break government on purpose so you can claim that it never works out.

It'll take years to rebuild these agencies, they've been decimated and wholly infiltrated by incompetent industry whores.

Why does that matter? We all know private sector can regulate itself even if the Federal Government doesn't. :)
Someone said the government outlawed warranties on the safety equipment. Warranties that require equipment be tested and maintained to retain the protection. I don't know how to find out if that is true or not, but if it is true, then the government actually outlawed one of the main methods of private sector self-regulation.

So government stopped BP from testing and maintaining safety equipment? Also, which party was in charge of the government when that happened?

Yup, I remember that too. MMS officials and private execs were in bed together, literally and figuratively.

The Democrats have had a congressional majority for almost four years now.
