so yeah, myname.com is already taken.

i could either make it myname.net or come up with a variation ie mynameonline.com

what would you go for?

You could get your name changed, though these days you might have to make something up to get one where the domain's available.

but doesn't .net imply it is an internet service provider or something?

i was never arrested by internet police or anything

well i came up with something diffrent. www.waggy.com was taken. so i had to come up with something else.

i think i might just add online to the end of it

that is to say, doughalpernonline

or chirsplummeronline if i decide to go with my pen name

my name is taken already, by some cyber squatter. My name is 1 letter off of a well known brand, so it figures that some moron will take it in hopes to make money off of typos.

i hate cybersquatters

For a personal site, I'd get the .net. For something where you're relying on attracting visitors - ie. business - you really need to come up with a unique name, and preferably register both the .com and the .net.

i too hate cybersquatters...i also hate people who register the .net and .org of the site i want, and then use it only for email forwarding for like 3 people...then i ask to buy it and he expects me to pay some large sum of money!!! WTFMATE! /rant

oh yeah its mellman.net and mellman.org and mellman.com is way too pricey

Yes, sortof, but as someone else said its not enforced. .com implies a company, so why even worry about it? .org is organization, theres tons of others 🙂
