If you're still getting an XBOX, why?

I see the list of launch games they announced at CES ... and none of them fail to get my attention. Maybe I'm not paying enough attention to them because their names suck or something, so which upcoming game you think is good (and not available on PC definitely)?

I'm trying to find a reason to justify even thinking about buying it, and it isn't working.

Because, I have to buy everything Bill Gates tells me to buy or my head will explode. I know now that drinking the tap water was a bad idea. I don't know how he got Windows into the water, but every time I try to pat my head and rub my belly at the same time I lock up.

heh, there was a mindblowing title for the PS2 at launch? NOPE! Personally I think the PS2 was way over hyped and won't be able to compete with the mighty MS XBox.

I own a PSX, but find ZERO reason to buy a PS2. I'll probably still be playing my PSX for another 3-4 years.

Jugernot, apparently a lot of people agree with you b/c around the world PSOne was the best selling console throughout December.

If the XBox can display DVDs in HDTV resoltion I will definitely buy it. No standalone DVD player can display DVDs in HDTV resolutions at present. I am only interested in it as a DVD player.

Peripheral features on the Xbox includes complete Ethernet and broadband support, the ability to create custom game soundtracks using regular music CDs and perhaps downloaded MP3 files, available V-chip-like parental controls, and downloadable game extras such as new tracks, levels, or characters using the console's hard drive. Inside the box, the console houses an Intel 733MHz Pentium III CPU and Nvidia NV2a 250MHz graphics processor. Additionally, it has 64MB of unified RAM, 8GB hard drive, 256 audio channels and 64 3D audio channels, HDTV movie and game support, 1920x1080 max resolution, the support of four simultaneous textures with 4.0GB/Sec pixel fill rate, and MIDI and DLS support. According to Microsoft, the Xbox specifications have been finalized and the company does not expect to make further performance tweaks. The Xbox is reportedly capable of delivering 125 million raw polygons per second.

I'm not sure what exactly you're talking about. The Xbox definitely wont be a progressive scan DVD player, in fact, it wont even play DVDs out of the box unless you buy the remote control (yeah sounds wierd doesnt it?)

In terms of DVD players displaying in HDTV resolutions, you're right, even with a progressive scan DVD player and an HDTV set, the picture you are getting is not considered "HDTV", then again, you'd be hard pressed to find a concrete definition of what HDTV is. However, that's because DVDs cant be displayed in 1080i or 720p, at least thats what I thought.

If the price is right I will get one in 2002. I am talking ~$100, no more.

Before you call me nuts, think of it like this. The box will probably be $300 - $400 at launch. They will milk all the techno-mongers for the full price from November until after Christmas. Around Feb 2002 Microsoft will surely offer one of their famous rebates, probably $100 off. Combine that with online hot deals and you will probably be able to chip the price down 75% off of retail. Hell, I did the same with my DC.

Well I doubt it would be that cheap, if it comes out for $200 I'd be pretty happy. Sony loses money for every PS2 that they sell, I'm sure Microsoft will lose money for every console it sells in the beginning, but I think $200 will be pretty competitive, but I have the feeling it'll be $250-300.

well okay, all launch games suck. What's on the horizon that's good? I mean, with PS2, you at least have the promise of GT3 and Metal Gear, and with gamecube you have Zelda and Metroid and whatnot. 1 game is enough to sell a system ... so many of my friends bought a SNES just for Street Fighter 2.

but I think their controllers suck!

Why? Have you had one in your hands to evaluate it? Everyone else who has says they are quite comfortable. I just got back from my second day at CES and NO- ONE is complaining about the Xbox there! I have seen how it games and bubba, that system blows away any consol game system out there, and I saw them all at CES. Hands down,Xbox wins at its current configuration. It is the only consol with broadband access right out of the box. It has a hard drive, not a memory stick. It has DVD,and if you need a remote for it,so be it.(I think Msoft may rethink that idea and bundle it,but November is a ways off.)

Bill Gates says it will be an Intel CPU(no AMD) and it will have the latest that Nvidia puts out for video. The size of the consol suggest to me and others that a mobo is inside(HDD needs a home and so does NIC card) What itteration of mobo comes out and what new a latest technology that can safely be brought in without too much complication,I'm sure they will use.

But as it stands today, the Xbox ROCKS!!!

More than my $.02;)

hmm...wonder what itll take to convert a regular pc into an xbox...besides the loss of the controllers, wouldnt it be real easy to emulate??

It really bothers me that even MS does not know the final specs for the unit. I mean, it's a little late in the game to be guessing what the final video part will be. They are claiming the current part shipped with the developers kit is only 1/5 of the "final" power of the XBox. I think they are blowing smoke up our asses. I expect the final video part to be a modified N20 card. If they can render the original ugly girl/robot demo in real time with the final silicon I will be amazed. As it is, I doubt they will be able to do it.

BTW, there is no mobo in the unit. The CPU, GPU and sound will all be on one board. It's a console, not a PC.

I still think the hard disk is a dumb idea. It's not even a sturdy HD as found in notebook PCs. I dropped many a console during heavy play. I don't expect the XBox HD to live long, esp when dropped while spinning.

How do you know? You have seen the inside? Are you a developer? Have you seen anything else that handles a data pipeline better than a motherboard desisgned to channal all the data and its paths?
Scale of economy dictates some form of a motherboard, albeit it would be propritary to the Xbox. It has all the elements used by a motherboard:video,audio,controls,I/O, HDD storage, ethernet connectivity,DVD. Its a large system, the size of a motherboard. Coincedence? I think not. The controllers are USB in nature as I am told. Seems thats best handled by a motherboard, like it or not.

Turn on TechTV and watch Bill Gates Keynote speech at CES. He will show the Xbox, explain it and demo its cuurent configuration. It stands to reason that nothing will be done that would throw a monkey wrench into the development of games from all the developers who have signed up and are writing software.

I am looking forward to gaming at DVD level,as apposed to CD-ROM. It's going to be awesome in how much content can be ported into that media.

Thats great eye candy, but most everything that I saw at CES on PS2 consols where football and snowboarding or skateboarding. EA has signed with Msoft to develop Madden Football. With 4 controllers and the ability to lan connect, this is a great platform for multiplayer games.

To think anything less is folly.

Tripleshot: so which game do you recommend to keeping an eye on?
Personally, I don't care much for sport games (ESPECIALLY American football), and graphics won't sell me.
