If your future/present wife refused to take on your last name, would you care?

Wouldn't mind. Her first name kinda rhymes with my last name and it'd be weird.

If we had kids, I'd probably call them bastards when they're old enough to realize I'm joking with them. I'd also refer to them as bastards when talking to others about them.

Whats you last name?
it's a famous one. that's all i'm sayin.

Does that mean you're famous?
mmmmmaybe, or related to

ohhh are you ted kennedy's daughter?
hells no
a politician, an actor/actress, author, director, someone else in hollywood?
huh?huh?
lol

I was posting in a teacher forum and this topic came up, mostly in the light of what to do in the classroom if you get married and your name changes in the middle of the year. The first reply was some guy trying to tell the girl that there was no good reason to not keep her maiden name and that he was happy that his wife didn't change her name... This thread made me think of that. The girl really wasn't convinced by the guy, and I wasn't either.

I think that when a couple gets married, a common last name kind of signifies the family status of the couple. Hyphenated last names are alright, too. And I don't really care if some other woman wants to keep her last name, but I don't think I will.

I find it frustrating as I'm in this situation (or will be, shall we say). I don't think it's fair that women get to keep this diamond-ring theory which has historical held true, and at the same time gain more power (eg, not changing their last names). Of course, if you truly love the person, it won't matter, but I don't think it's extremely fair.

So you think your wife should submit to your whims because you paid for a diamond ring?

😕

Uhm, no. They're called traditions. It isn't fair for one side to have to comply and not the other.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is bending over to feminism, IMHO.

Have fun being on a chain the rest of your life. 😉

Eh? You just noticed now? I haven't done it in what must have been a year. I forgot why I stopped though. Every once in a special while, I'll do one, but thats it!

While you might prefer a meek little girl who cooks you dinner and says "yes" to everything, I prefer a woman who can think for herself and will tell me so.

i really wouldn't want a subservient guy.

I mean this in jest but my first thought is that if I have to follow some ridiculous tradition of giving her an expensive shiny trinket to stick on her finger when we get engaged then hell yes, she has to follow the equally ridiculous tradition of taking my last name.
