If your friend was bitten in the groin by a poisonous snake ...

Ummm... no sucking here...

I would have one of those snake bite kits handy on such an occasion. Either that, or I would find a hospital--fast!

I wouldnt , I would tell him to apply pressure and not move. Movement causes the poison to spread faster, then I would go for help.

/me files away the snakebite-to-the-groin-you-have-to-suck-out-the-poison-or-I'll-die trick for my next camping trip with hot women. 😉

<< Ummm..sucking out the poison to save someone is an old wives tales. >>

Actually, no, it's not. However, mouth suction is no longer suggested because it's dangerous. They actually have suction devices in snake bite kits now.

But what's more important than suction is a tight wrap up the extemity from the bite to slow the blood flow between the snake bite area and the rest of the body.

<< A friend? No, I wouldn't let a friend die. What kind of question is that? >>

Actually, it's from an old joke I heard as a kid.

Two men were out in the desert. One of them was bitten by a poisonous snake in the groin/penis. The other man tells his friend to lie there while he gets help. Wandering around for awhile, he finally finds a public telephone. He makes a call to 911. "Help, my friend was just bitten by a poisonous snake! What can I do?". The man on the other end of the phone tells him that he has to suck out the poison.

He hangs up and heads toward his friend. When his friend sees him, he asks, "Well, what did you find out?". The man replies, "You're going to die".

That's like the old joke:

- You ask your friend
"If you went camping with a bunch of guys for the weekend and you all sat around the fire getting drunk and you passed out and woke up in the morning with your pants around your ankles and your ass all greased up and sore would you tell anyone?"

- Your Friend answers
"NO!"

- You ask
"Want to go camping?"

HAWHAWHAW

Yup, friend's gonna die. I don't like any man enough to put my face in that part of his body. Besides, my friends would rather die than let someone suck anything from their crotch. it's just to gay.

<< If you cut it off real fast before the poison travel up the blood stream it'll be alright 🙂 No suckie. >>

😱 😱 😱 😱 😱

The suction devices are actually put into the kits because the 'suction' treatment method has become so ingrained into people's minds that they're going to do it anyway, so the kit might as well give them something to do it with. That's all. Suction devices are completely ineffective.

Venom gets distributed by the lymphatic system, it is extremely unlikely that a fang will manage to inject venom directly into a vessel, so uptake/distribution by the blood stream is a distant second to lymphatic concerns. A pressure dressing (Ace type bandage) wrapped along the limb starting proximal to the heart and wrapped toward the bite is recommended vs. a tourniquet for this reason, it doesn't take as much pressure to stop the lymphatics from flowing as it does the blood.

That and avoiding panic, keeping calm, and getting to a hospital where antivenom can be administered as soon as possible are the recommended treatment measures.

BOY. WHAT A RELEVANT QUESTION.

Pretty nice answer. The suction would only work if you did it after lancing the wound and within a few seconds, so it is pretty much useless. (not to mention if you have any cuts in your mouth, it is the same as getting bit in your mouth) The constricting bands are the best thing, like tcsenter said. Do not use a tourniquet because it keeps the toxins so localized you will get massive tissue necrosis, errr, death, and probably lose the limb.

I would rather not know how a person could get bit there in the first place. :Q
