If your DSL router stopped working last week... here's a fix.

Sometime last week my trusty Negear 4 port dsl router quit on me. If I connected my dsl modem directly to my computer and used XP's built in PPPoe dialer, everything was fine.

So after one call to earthlink customer no-service ("don't use a router"), I figured out a fix. Connect with PPPoe, find your DNS addresses (at comand prompt: ipconfig /all) and put the dns settings in your router. Lo and behold, your router will magically work again.

Just trying to help.

That's weird. I have my Linksys DSL router connected through Earthlink, and their DHCP server properly assigns me the proper primary and secondary DNS addresses. I hard coded them in anyway, however, because it can never find the tertairy DNS server.

Here's a list to a bunch of OpenNIC DNS addresses. I started using these servers during the great @home to ATTBI transition when they were having all sorts of DNS server issues and have had no problems with them. Hope this helps for anyone else having DNS issues.

Ah, the joys not not having to deal with that PPPoE crap... :)

I suppose your "fix" depends on why the router's not working properly in the first place.
