so I have this great professor, nice guy, helps.....very good person. But the freaking grader who grades the homework...c'mon man, your a student too....give us undergrads a break.

I have had some graders who give you full marks or close to full almost all time, and someone of them, wil give you 0 credit if you did it wrong

understand man!!

so for all of you who are a grad student and grade homework, cut us some slack.....

yes, and i'm talking to you, if you are the grader for my analysis class....

i have a few friends who are graders. some of them are tough, but most let you slide with the points if there seems to be some effort put in the hw.

sometimes the prof gives graders the guidlines and tells them to use their judgement when grading...

if everyone is graded by the same grader and held to the same level of strictness it doesn't really make a difference

What will help you more is if you did the homework correctly in the first place.

yeah, especially since it's usually curved.

Besides, homework is only important in that it helps you remember the material for a test. It's seldom a large factor in your grade.

I disagree. If a student has the correct method and managed to mess up the problem, I'd give partial credit. Maybe even most of the credit if it was just some stupid mistake. They know HOW to do the problem.

In the same spirit, having the correct answer and BS method gets less to no credit.

I've never graded, but I was a TA for two years as a favor to my research advisor. I held all the office hours and wrote the homework solutions. The graders (undergrads) would grade based on the solutions. Sometimes the graders would ask what to do when it was obvious that a student or group had cheated. I'd tell them to assign a zero... but the graders never would.

When I rule the world, everything will be fair.

edit: The class I TA'ed was the first course in semiconductor devices at UIUC. Most of the students were junior-level ECE students. About 225 students at the beginning of the semester; about 175 at the end. About 10 would get a non-passing grade at the end. The class was heavily weighted, of course.
