Thank you for those words of wisdom. Everyone, let's tell all of the none English speaking people in America to go back to what ever country the come from because a few people don't like the fact that they don't speak "the language". : ) Amanda
It's not the fact that they don't know english. My beef is that some don't want to.

Why do you care if they don't want to ??? It only makes it harder for them, not for you. Actually, it improves your chances of making it, because you have less competition.
1.) I'm just trying to correct the inaccuracies posted by ohtwell.
2.) I just think it's pretty hypocritical for people to come into the US to reap benefits, direct and indirect, government provided or not, without wanting to learn English.
3.) I have the freedom to care about these kind of things, just like they have the freedom to not speak English. Of course, they might have a hard time finding out that freedom if they didn't know English.

My innacuracies?

If you'd payed attention you would have noticed that I quoted roncarter not you.

What I said was in response to what that person posted not what you had posted.

You seem to be having ethnicity problems lately. :)

I think that everyone who lives in America should be able to communicate in English. It causes fewer problems. If there were a language that the entire world could speak, and if we decided to only use that one, it would be great. I'd learn it.

Here in America, we use English.

However, this is such a small problem, and there are bigger fish to fry.

The phone thing? Just press 1.

O para Espanol, marque 2.

this isn't a "should English be the only language used in the US" thread, I have no problem with spanish phone services.

I do find it kinda rude, however, when some mexican dudes come up and say a bunch of crap to me and i have no idea what he said. maybe i should've taken spanish over german :/

Exactly. It would be nice if everyone knew English, unfortunately that's not the reality. So some companies and agencies have instituted the press 1 for English...press 2 for Spanish, either for business reasons or logical reasons (majority of neighborhood being Spanish). Why would this simple little thing be enough to upset anyone?

WRONG. obviously it takes time for people to learn, but there should be requirements to learn the language.

and to those of you that say it only hurts those that refuse to learn english, that's BS. what about all the funds that are being put into ESL programs in ALL PUBLIC schools. who do you think is paying for all that. what about all the different language tests available at the local DMV, our tax dollars at work mb??

Some of you try and trivialize the whole debate as if it wasn't a serious debate in this country and yet it is, or should be.

there are schools in CA and TX that are trying to go all Spanish, can you actually think that this would be a good idea??

Actually, I live a multi cultural Life, my 5 yr old speaks FLUENT KOREAN AND ENGLISH. but we took it upon ourselves to make sure he got fluent in BOTH languages so don't tell me i don't accept multiculturalism.

it still doesn't change my basic thesis that ALL RESIDENTS of the US should be REQUIRED to learn english.

how can you claim its multiculturalism if non english speaking people refuse to learn english and will only speak their native language? that isn't multiculturalism, thats cultural division.

Exactly what is the reason for this thread agin? I keep getting it mixed up. I thought it was that you had a problem with a simple little recorded message. Then I thought you were actually defending Hispanics and calling for the end of injustices done to them. Then I thought it was a rant about the possible cultural intrusion of Spanish speaking people into our(your) ways. Now it seems to be a b!tch about schools thinking of going to all Spanish and you having a (legitimate) gripe about flipping the bill. You seem to be going off on all these different tangents...do you just have a problem with Hispanics? Kind of like your problem with blacks in your other thread. ;)

My opinion:

You should be able to speak whatever language or dialect you want. There is no "English only" clause in the First Amendment. This applies to businesses as well. If they feel they should offer people service in other languages, that's their right as private businesses.

I do, however, support keeping government affairs in English only. If for nothing else, it promotes unity, and saves money.

The reason they ask you what language you want to continue in isnt so you can better understand them...its just one more step between you and them, or (if you wish) one more step you have to take to talk to them. :p

Because by 2075 Hispanics will be the majority population in the USA. Thankfully I'll be dead by then.

language helps bind a people together. sure diversity has its points, but without communication you have nothing. without a standard you do not have efficiency. lack of communication can only cause strife. we are only human, it is not an utopia where everyone can speak their own language and get along.

Like it or not, Spanish will become more important Kick and scream all you want, it won't do you any good. I don't speak Spanish, luckily in Idaho, it isn't much of a disadvantage, yet. Like it or not, Spanish will become as an American language as English. I can see the Buchanan people screaming "stop immigration before those foreigners destroy America!" now. Now you know how those Indians felt when they saw the White people spreading across this great land. For better or for worse (depend on which sides you're on), America will always be changing, if you don't adapt, you will disappear, like the Indians and the buffaloes.

What really gets me is when companies hire immigrants that can barely speak a word of English for their customer support.

I called Sprint to activate my cellphone and I tried talking to this Indian kid. For the most part I'm patient about this kind of stuff, but this guy could barely speak a word of English and couldn't understand me when I'd say something. I'd say I wanted to activate my phone and the Sprint rep that I bought the phone from offered me my first two months at $10 cheaper. He couldn't understand this and I'd repeat myself, and then he'd say something totally unrelated...then he got angry because I wouldn't activate my phone until he verified that I'd get my $20 off. Then I just told him I wanted to speak to someone else or a manager, because he simply could not understand me. He was getting a very rude tone in his voice and at this point I just got tired of his sh!t and told him to lick em and go back to worshipping cows.

Seriously, what the hell is with companies that hire out these goddamn immigrants that can barely speak English for the ENGLISH phone support. In trying to find cheap labor they hire unqualified people.

Problem is, we're going to get to a point where states want to break from the union much like Quebec and Canada. I sure as hell don't want to deal with 90% Spanish speakers when I go to Texas. I'm an American citizen and I want to be able to go anywhere in my country and be able to understand anyone that I have to deal with. I don't care if you're Italian, Mexican, Japanese, or Iranian...get yourself some English lessons and don't expect me or anyone else to bend for you.

But isn't Texas home to a Spanish speaking population long before English? You can change the border of countries, but the people are still there, with a Spanish heritage. Another thing, they can vote too! No, I don't think Texas can ever be an English-only state. I'm sure those people have bent more than you ever did over the years.

"can see the Buchanan people screaming "stop immigration before those foreigners destroy America!" now"

I am a Buchanan supporter, and I feel this is the only logical arguement ro make. Any debate?

I have one. What if they had done that before your ancestors came? Immigrants made this country what it is. Our diversity is what has made us great.

Don't stop immigration. But do force people to do government business in English. Mainstream immigrant children in schools so they are forced to learn English. Teach them the cold hard fact that they will remain in the ghettos until they can communicate with mainstream America.

The vast majority of European and Asian immigrants accepted this fact, and learning English was their top priority. Most children of immigrants ended up speaking English perfectly with no accent. For some reason, Latin folks don't see this as important.

This thread is interesting since we have the same problem here in New Zealand. I often have to deal with Polynesians (and now Asians) who have been here since the 70's that still haven't learned English. I mean, wtf?? Who comes to a country and doesn't learn the language in 30 years?? Okay, a year or two I can understand...but after that it becomes just laziness. And what's worse is that that PC mob call anyone racist if they criticize them.
