What are cops like in England? Are they a-holes like American cops? Do they try to give you tickets for anything they can think of, request unnecessary vehicle searches, and talk down to people?

Ok.
Ironically, the age group who is always asking for more speed, has the highest per-capita deaths by auto accident. Grow up and realize that racing has it's place and the streets and roads need to be safe. :(

The faster you are travelling, the less time you have to react to hazard. I know some of you zit ranchers don't care, but I'm saying it anyway.

What if we don't race and have never been in an accident? The minority I am, I assume, but the question begs asking.

you have more time to react if you allow yourself more space between cars.

Of course you do, but going faster does not allow for more space.

It tops out at 65 here in Illinois. There are many stretches of Highway were the speed of traffic is in excess of 90 miles per hour. Then there are stretches where the speed of traffic averages 10 miles per hour.

The limit should be determined by having a beater 10 year old van with crappy brakes, poor alignment, etc, try to run the stretch of road as fast as it possibly can in the rain ..... then whatever speed it is able to run without crashing be set to the max speed limit. Then set a "rain" speed limit 15 MPH slowwer, and a "icy/snow" speed limit of like 50 or 60 mph ...

To get these "upgraded licenses", drivers must take a rigorous and harshly graded performance driving class and a tough test of skill in order to complete it. Not the joke of a driver's ed class that everyone takes. Anyone caught driving in the speed lanes without an upgraded license would be fined heavily. Same goes for anyone caught yapping on the phone, or otherwise distracted in these lanes, upgraded license or not. Absolutely no commercial traffic allowed.

That way, the sh!tty, slow drivers stay on the main roads, and those who wish to drive fast without these obstacles (provided they pass the test, of course) can do so. The grandmas don't get pissed about tailgaters and speeders, and those who actually know what they are doing and take driving seriously get a road without all the crap drivers on it.

Yes, it's flawed, but...I can dream. ;)

It will never work, but I l ike the way you think. Cheers!

I think the speed limits should just stay the same. I dont need do stupid idiot in suv/truck/sports/van passing me going 90,95,100,105mph+. If someone going that fast was to rear end someone, espically if they are driving a big truck/suv, the person they rear end, most likely would be severly injured.

I dunno...I think there is a rational speed for every road, and people will only go 20mph over when the limit is way too low. I find less people speed on the (U.S. not I) 95 out here (very rural for most of the way) out where it is 70-75 than in the cities were it is 65.

Yes, I think if the limit was 100 people would go 110 or higher :Q

I really don't give a crap about my mileage. I get 29-30 MPG if I go ~73 MPH, and 27-28 MPG doing high 70's (and low 80's in Indiana). Doing semi-regular 8 hour drives I'll gladly pay a couple of bucks more to knock a half-hour off the drive.

80 should be the limit.

Although none of this would be a problem if the cops used discretion, letting people do 120 at 2 in the morning on the LIE, for example. That place is a barren wasteland.

Yeah... nassau cops are payed too much money and don't do enough about the dangerous drivers such as the ones that change lanes without looking or signaling or drivers who are extremely reckless behind the wheel.

The only people Ive seen LI cops pull over are people they randomly chose to pull over for speeding, since EVERY SINGLE PERSON is speeding.

Cops try to pull people over whenever they get a chance at night because they get all excited about maybe getting to write a DUI. They just love it!
