If you would raise the speed limit, what would it be?

It really irks me that my cars engine has so much potential yet it is neutered by a speed limit of 55mph. I believe that the speed limit should be somewhat higher. If it was my say I would have main drags be akin to the Autobahn, with a ceiling of say 100mph. But the smaller rural highways would remain the same.

What do you think?

It really irks me that there are so many dumb people out there and the speed limits keeps them from killing themselves.

was that harsh?

The US should follow the way of the Autobahn IMO :)

But if you raise the speed limit, then people will go 10 - 20 miles above it, so you'll have people going anywhere between 80 and 100 on highways. You'll be allowing people who shouldn't be driving ever to drive faster........

The Autobahn has a ceiling at certain points in it b/c of the rush hour traffic, but to get a license in Germany is a lot harder to do than get a license in the U.S.

Nope. You are entitled to your views.

A speed limit system based off of a drivers attentiveness would be unique and interesting. :)

If you raise the speed limit to 100 miles per hour, do you really think there will be a lot of people going faster than that?

The issue with raising the speed limits is that it's ingrained into our society that we need to speed. Indiana recently raised limits to 70 MPH from 65 MPH. So what do I do? Drive 5 MPH faster than I do in Ohio and Illinois. The fastest I feel comfortable in my car is about 85 MPH so I'll continue to speed until the limit is that high or I get a ticket.

Do you guys that go 80 and up like wasting gas? You are killing your gas mileage going high 60's and up.

Yes, I think if the limit was 100 people would go 110 or higher :Q

Maybe there shouldnt be a limit then or if there is one, then it should be like 200 mph (something most cars couldnt achieve)

With how people drive in NY, I could believe that people would drive faster.... and then throw in the no turn signals, lane drifting, etc....

If there is a limit, it should be a minimum speed limit.
God damn people driving 60 on the fast lane can die for all I care.

Yea, of course. Most people go 5-10 mph above the speed limit. And if you get into a caravan of cars I'm sure you can up that to 10-15 faster. At least I do.

I would prefer the US work on its licensing system instead.

Keep them the way they are for the masses - but add special lanes for those with "upgraded" licenses.

To get these "upgraded licenses", drivers must take a rigorous and harshly graded performance driving class and a tough test of skill in order to complete it. Not the joke of a driver's ed class that everyone takes. Anyone caught driving in the speed lanes without an upgraded license would be fined heavily. Same goes for anyone caught yapping on the phone, or otherwise distracted in these lanes, upgraded license or not. Absolutely no commercial traffic allowed.

That way, the sh!tty, slow drivers stay on the main roads, and those who wish to drive fast without these obstacles (provided they pass the test, of course) can do so. The grandmas don't get pissed about tailgaters and speeders, and those who actually know what they are doing and take driving seriously get a road without all the crap drivers on it.

Yes, it's flawed, but...I can dream. ;)

I agree that gas mileage is what would normally keep me from going above 80 however speed limits could be a lot higher

80, maybe 90mph. the general public is too stupid to safely operate a vehicle above those speeds.

edit: hell, there are many people on the road which can't safely operate a vehicle at 25mph.

No speed limit on interstate freeways and expressways. However to get your license you would have to go through a very rigorous training course, and pass a quite difficult test before it you could get one. With skill tests every few years to make sure you are still able to drive safely. It seems that the ways things are now, they give a damn license to just about anyone, as long as you have a face.

In downtown Milwaukee, they raised the speed limit 10mph higher than it was for awhile and they found that the number of accidents increased significantly. I'd be fine with increased speed limits in more rural areas or on unbusy parts of interstates, but in areas with any kind of real traffic, the speed limits are as they are for a reason. They aren't arbitrary numbers.
