If you were upgrading with budget in mind would you?

Would you go for 9500 L-Shaped and softmod or just stay safe with a 9600 pro for 40 dollars more?

I'd go with a 9600 Pro simply because it's pretty fast once you overclock it, and if the softmod isn't sucessful on the 9500, you won't have a very good card. People are getting 500+ Mhz out of the 9600 Pro's GPU I believe.

9600 Pro -- or, if I were planning on buying Half Life 2 anyway, wait a couple weeks for the (faster) 9600XT that comes with a voucher for a free copy of Half Life 2, making the cost of the card effectively about the same as a 9600 Pro.

Edit: Notwithstanding that I just bought a BFG Asylum 5600 Ultra flip chip card at Best Buy, only because it was a really cheap open-box deal, I would go with the 9600 pro if the prices were close at all.

I'd be shocked if it was even $250... it will NOT be 300 unless you live in canada =)

The half life that comes with the XT's is probably going to be single player only. Not a very good deal unless you have no intention of online or lan play.

The 9600XT is only marginally faster than a 9600pro as they did not improve the memory speed. A good 9600pro can be had for about $150.

I'd rather get the Gigacube "Ultimate" that comes clocked 400/365DDR with 2.5ns Samsungs. They are about $180.

who is the vendor of this 9600? How much does its performance lag behind a 9700 pro?

CONNECT3D 9600 PRO 128MB DDR DVI+TV RETAIL ... $152
ATI 9600 PRO 128MB 8X AGP DVI/TV RETAIL ... $165

9600pro is midrange. 9700 is highend and a significant jump over a 9600pro. I like the ATI retail 9600pro because it comes with a 3 year factory warranty.

9600 Pro. This is just me but, I'd probably lose the hl2 voucher when April 2004 comes around :p

Actually, our dollar is so strong right now it will be closer to $250 rather than $300 now!
