say you were given a choice to move anywhere in the US, but were given a modest budget for a startup home. where would you go?

Downtown Detroit. There are some real estate bargains there, and with about $150,000 of startup money, a job, and some hard work and elbow grease, you can have a GREAT home.

Depends if you want to resell it or live in a place where your property taxes won't force you to relocate again ;)

Probably San Francisco, New York City, Seattle or Denver...then again, I already live in America's finest city. I can't see leaving here honestly.

Tennessee... that would be my first choice... recently built up enough to make it modern, but still quite country. Plus I have family there.

I would not mind somewhere in the Carolina's. Or parts of GA or KY. I am so sick of the city... I hate it.

Some of you people seem to have a totally screwed up idea of a modest budget. NYC, SF, Hawaii... yeah. For a modest budget you can buy a dog house in those places, nothing more.

I've lived here for 8 years. I reserve the right to strike down your judgement. ;)

Well, with a modest budget plus the equity in my house I could easily buy something more than a dog house in most of the places I mentioned...with the possible exception of NYC and SF.

If we live in one of those places already and sell it, our budget will be fine, thank you very much.
