If you were handling a switch to vBulletin, how long would it take you?

Curious to see how fast the nerds of ATOT think it can be done.

Since I know very little about this topic, I can't really make a pole. With enough suggestions, that might change.

Site this size? Three months or so if it wasn't my full time job. Longer for someone who doesn't have my expertise (Linux developer, worked on a number of extremely large sites backed by Apache/PHP/MySQL).

I say we all chip in and get Derek Wilson a nice present when it's finally done.
Assuming it actually does get done this century 😛

Nope. A single server setup is no big deal, but when you have to scale the site over multiple servers (that is, multiple Web frontends and multiple database backends) things get complicated in a hurry.

Add to the fact that the AnandTech Forums currently run on a Windows environment and the people who administrate it probably have little in the way of experience with the Linux-based Apache, PHP and MySQL - it'll take time to do right.

15 minutes.

For a changover like this, Id start with a fresh blank system and force everyone to reregister.

really?

About 10 seconds, I'd just find some little-used forum that was already running it and just redirect all the traffic there, keeping the address the same so that no one was the wiser. After the inevitable crash, I'd just blame it on the hosting company and laugh all the way to the Bahamas.

That's the plan anyway.

I vote for divide by zero because I don't really have any experience with setting up forums. Not enough info, although I could probably do it fairly quickly once I found out how...

Successfully dividing by zero is the secret to time travel.

Oops, I have said too much 😱

What, you meant they don't have vBulletin on their Fantastico One-Click Install in their web hosting control panel? What the hell kind of mom and pop website is Anand running here? 🙂

Not very long. I'd just start from scratch and make everyone re-register, then let them view (but not post in) the old forums. I'm lazy, what can I say...

How big could anandtech possibly be? Its all text. I would imagine 1TB to be an extreme upper bound.
