If I had around $1200 to spend on a good laptop, I'd buy a Compaq X1000.

I'd want TWO laptops. A Sony TR series for when I want something really small with good battery life, and an Alienware Area-51m for gaming. If I had to choose just one, though, I'd want an IBM Thinkpad T41p.
