If you were going to buy a motherboard for an AMD Barton for $125 or less, what would you get? Also, what RAM would you get? I was looking at Corsair, but its 80 dollars for 256mb, is it worth the price?
Abit NF7-S is what I got. Great board with great on-board sound.
As for ram I am using 2 slabs of 256mg Geil PC3200. I have it clocked at PC2700, same speed as the CPU, but have the timings set to above average for it. Its cheap and works for me.
I'd go with Asus A7N8X Deluxe, or Abit NF7. As for mem Kingston HyperX PC3500 or Corsair XMS PC3200
but thats just me.
and my two cents, for a value system ECS L7S7A2 and 512mb Samsung PC3200 (you could prolly get both for close to $125)
I have an NF7-S V2.0 and have had zero problems with it. I'm running an Athlon XP 1700+ at 2300MHz. A lot of people with NF7-S boards are using Corsair XMS3200, mainly because you can get tight memory timings. I'm using Corsair XMS3500 and it works great. I've seen the NF7-S advertised for around $100. Just make sure you get Version 2.0.
Being a real bargain hunter, I went for a Shuttle AN35N for $66 for my XP 1700+ "B". It will handle a Barton fine when I decide to upgrade it again. As for ram, I am running a single stick of Kingston PC-2700 Valueram that just happened to come with Winbond chips. It is running very nicely at 175 Mhz as we speak. Were I to go for better quality ram, I would look hard for a deal on Kingston Hyper X or maybe try some of the Buffalo Technology stuff from newegg (about $90 for a 512 mb stick of PC-3200) Good luck.
