They don't coat the outside with chocolate. They coat it with a candy shell, just like all the rest, and use artificial coloring to make it brown. Just like all the rest.

It was actually a reference to a movie. Sigh.
 
Some colour so vile that no Sane Human would ever put into their mouths. Then I would sit discarded in some corner of the room with the dust bunnies and laugh at all the M&Ms rushing towards their Darwin Awards.
