I was thinking of breeding cows in order to make whey protein bars from their milk. I think protein bars are the most effective way to feed people.

Buy a tremendous amount of property out west and play around ala Cody's Lab. Set up endowments with the rest to do things like feed and house people, promote education, etc.

Do you like marshmallows? These are currently my favorite protein bars: (whey isolate with collagen)

I usually eat the "pure protein" brand, they're usually the best protein-for-your-buck with limited sugar.

The latter might be true, but cows are extremely inefficient. You cannot improve them to the efficiency level of even, say, tofu bars, no matter what you do. (No comments on taste!)

I think we need to move beyond farming for the production of basic foodstuffs. (The stuff ultraprocessed food is made of, for better or for worse.)

I know there are ways to produce sugar, starch, and fats without biological processes. Proteins do require biology, but microorganisms can be fed synthesized sugar, or electricity, or both. That's what I'd want to put money into.

What is the protein supplement thing nowadays? Protein deficiency is really unusual in the west. I'd imagine that it's really rare in the US!

Well, you have to eat something to live. People say carbs and fat are bad for you. (Sometimes different people say some variety of one or the other can be good for you, but that's the general feeling.) People also tend to dislike fiber. That basically leaves protein. Some people also like the Atkins diet.

My counter to that would be it's pretty bad to just eat one thing, you need to eat a variety. Carbs and fat are fine as part of a varied diet. Just living on one of them would be pretty awful.

You
can overdo protein BTW. It's not great for your kidneys to eat too much of it!

I agree, but you asked for reasons why people are going for the protein supplement thing. I didn't say they were good reasons! And, yes, some people are having kidney problems from too much protein these days.

I would open a series of "Third Spaces": essentially community centers where people can meet, hangout, play, volunteer, host events, etc

To try and fill the social void left by churches and malls and places where people would go just to not be at home or at work.

90% charitable causes and projects, make all my family and good friends set for life, and then invest and play with the rest for a while

FWIW, there are newer studies that have been done with 400g protein a day; turns out the kidneys were just fine! Notes:

1. While you can eat that much, but much above a gram per bodyweight doesn't have much effect outside of competitive bodybuilding
2. Fiber is a big key & is what most people are missing
3. Macros-based meals (protein + carbs + fats + fiber) are best for fueling the body & keeping the GI tract flowing

There are, of course, conditions that require a reduced intake, such as chronic kidney disease, where they lower your percentage of protein as the stages progress (ex. Stage 4 of CKD is like 10% of calories from protein).
